And his name is Dan Lanning.

He is the only choice for the job - and he has the best perspective on all of the college talent coming out for at least the next four years.

No brainer

He’s already paid twice as much as McCarthy and is signed through the 2031 season. Do you think Jerry Jones will step up and pay Oregon what it would take to get them to release him from his commitment? And that would be if Lanning would prefer to coach the Dallas Cowboys rather than Oregon’s football team.

Head Coaches with good jobs are not going to step down and take lesser jobs like being Jerry Jones’ head coach. That’s a “No brainer”. Your suggestion is asinine.

Why would he leave Oregon?
I used to think that the head coach of a big name college would be preferable to an NFL gig. They make millions of dollars, work on a college campus, coach players that are more likely to listen, make a decent bowl game every year and the boosters are happy and the press is generally less vicious. Not sure about where all that's going now with the portal and pay-to-play but I'd still think coaching at Oregon beats coaching in Dallas. Sure the glitz and adoration is nice but it's fleeting and more often than not people want you gone.

Lol,
You’ve got to wonder how many college coaches, especially those without at least coordinator experience in the NFL, have to fail miserably before it finally sinks in.
I can remember many here clamoring for Matt Rhule for the very same reasons… Carolina is still trying to recover from that what should have been predictable disaster!

I too miss the good old days when young men were maimed for free while athletic directors and coaches got rich off their efforts.

Would Jerral even have the cojones to open up the checkbook? Lanning is set to make $7m+ for the next several years and has a buyout of $20m if he chooses to go elsewhere. Nike University has all the cash backing they need to up his contract at any point if another team wants his services. He also has near unlimited NIL money (for the time being) to bring in just about anyone he wants to build his team. If he wins a national championship, his price tag sky rockets. Kirby Smart is making $13m/year, and McCarthy, a Super Bowl winning coach, is making between $4m and $7m/year. I'd love to see it, but realistically, I just don't see ownership shelling out the necessary cash to bring him in.
