I think all referees want games to be lopsided routs

I think sports referees, deep down, want all games that they officiate to be lopsided routs. Doesn't matter to them which team wins, as long as it's by a huge margin. It makes any officiating mistakes forgotten or seemingly irrelevant.

A close, narrow game which is decided by just a few plays, however, magnifies the consequences of any refereeing errors.

What do you think?

I don't think so. It seems that most halftime blowouts become much closer in the second half, with the close calls going to the team that is behind. The League wants tight games, especially the Nationally televised ones.

I think they're paid more than enough to take their jobs seriously.

You mean sort like Dunbars long screen with all those linemen 5 yards down the field before he catches it. ;)

I officiated college basketball and trust me - you can get in just as much trouble in a blowout as you can in a close game. You just do your job the best you can, you don't have the luxury or the inclination to do anything else.

You do realize these refs are graded on every single call they make and don't make, right? And are graded. They look over these games with a fine tooth comb. It's not the fans they need to worry about, it's their bosses whom grade them. Now you can make an argument over how much accountability refs have in sports on their calls and missed calls.

I'm not saying referees deliberately make games into blowouts.

I'm saying I think they want games to be blowouts.

Ahhhhh.... No. I think they want close games that show high intensity and many lead changes.
Those games make them work herd and not miss anything.
Blowouts lead to sloppy calls.

I can definitely see that being the case. I know when I'm refing flag football games in our local league that I have a much better, and frankly easier, time refing the games that one team is just getting crushed. It keeps them from really complaining to much about the refs and more to eachother about how bad they're doing.
