DE in 4-2-5 Nickel vs OLB in 3-4

I don't have the stats, but I was watching some DWare highlight videos and I counted more sacks when he played DE than OLB.

It would make sense because 4-2-5 was Wade's pass defense and 3-4 was was his base downs defense.

how many years did DWare play in the 4-3 and 3-4 under both Zimmer, Parcells

and how many years under 3-4 Wade ...

and how many years did he play in Kiffin, Marinelli 4-3 scheme before he was eventually cut ? ...

Hard to get a sack when you are covering the RB coming out of the backfield.

This use to frustrate me to no end.
There use to be times where I’m not sure if it was okay design but they’d even have Ratliff do that. Amazing that a your DT can do it but it’s bad they have too IMo.

Why?

He was always 3-4 except the 1 year with Kiffin.

He was only in coverage about 5% of snaps.

Spencer played coverage on over 20%.

If Ware was in coverage vs a RB, that was often when the offense needed 3 or 4 yards to get a 1st. Those are quick dump off plays will little chance of a sack anyway.

People don't like the changeups, but they give the QB one more thing to think about all game.

Marinelli was predictable. "We'll beat them with execution." Does anyone think that's really the way to go?

The makeup of defensive scheme this season will require a very sophisticated view and study to fairly evaluate on carpet play this year. It will likely be a very good year to keep count of game time plays by players.

Most people don’t realize that the NFL didn’t go to the 3-4 because it’s a better pass rush defense. There have been a few superior OLBs who played in the 3-4, but that defense became popular in the NFL because it’s better vs the Run game. A brute nose tackle requires a double team from C&G; the DEs are 290+ (More like DTs), playing inside shoulder on the tackles. Then you have two bigger than normal OLBs and usually 2 big thumpers at Inside LB.

Isn't the objective to kill the ball carrier? I get different responsibilities but it's the same.

He didn’t play coverage a lot but he had 25 PD
A very under rated player

Ware would have been good no matter where you put him but seeing him doing something other than rush the passer was a waste of his talent and minutes.

It took away from what he did best.

Parsons on the other hand can make plays as a LB and play DE. He can rush the passer from the DE or LB position and teams have to plan for it, giving him and his team mates the element of suprise and flexibility.

I always thought the argument that he couldn’t play DE was the best way to know if someone understands the basics of an NFL defense.
