I think it's pretty obvious that Hamlin brings more to our defense than credited

I mean people wanna ***** when he misses a tackle and stuff but how many times does he get deep or does any team beat our secondary deep?

I think teams not even attempting passes to his area is more of an indication on how well he covers -as his coverage on that Desean Jackson deep ball would show- rather than him just being back there, picking his nose and sucking on a sucker as most people wanna believe.

I also believe his lack of ints are more reflective on the system we play. Our FS is basically our protector back there and takes away the deep ball.

People will hammer you, but this is a good thread. He played very well yesterday and has since he's gotten healthy....I agree with you!!!!!!!!!!

Exactly your last sentence... He's supposed to stay deep and, more than anything, get the D lined up properly. That's crucial to the defense we've been playing.

People hate the guy, but he does watch a ton of film and is a very cerebral player. And that's very important with all the things offenses throw at defenses these days.

I also think people remember those last two games from last year, especially the Ravens game. But I don't think they remember that he was playing on a VERY bad ankle.

I know he is not a good tackler but he has played well since he came back. He seemed to be in good position all day against the Eagles.

He actually allowed a deep pass yesterday. That's a pretty rare occasion.

I hope you're right, I've been really down on him, but then I really don't know squat

all it takes ( to get that same type of production ) is experience and knowlege. George Teague did the same, exact thing ( for many years ), for a 1/3rd of Hamlin's salary and he made more plays than Hamlin.

He had a great contract year, but he hasn't played up to the new contract ever since.

People hating on Ken Hamlin never made sense. He was the best thing we had back there since George Teague, and Hamlin's better than Teague ever was at coverage, in my opinion.

As for Alan Ball, yes, he has played lights out this year.

you know who really didnt disappoint me at all, Alan Ball.

:hammer:

Give him a little more time and, eventually, he could turn out to be a starting FS in this league. He has all the tools. Now all he needs is the experience.

Based on yesterday's game, Ball is taking time away from Sensabaugh, rather than Hamlin, which makes sense because Hamlin is so much better in coverage than Sensabaugh.

No way.. Not even close..

George Teague covered WRs almost as good as a CB starting from his days at Alabama. Hamlin is the better athlete, better hitter ( he started his career as a SS ) but Teague was more fluid and absolutely the better playmaker.

Well, if you think about it, Sensabaugh started the year showing excellent coverage skills ( for a safety ). Then after he hurt his wrist or hand, he hasn't been the same.

It's pretty hard to tell which of them is actually better because in Wade's system, both safeties are interchangeable when it comes to responsabilities. About the only difference is who makes the call, which is in this case is Hamlin.

Ball is a player, though. You can just see has " it ", when he steps on the field. All he needs is PT.

I agree that he did give up that deep ball to Jackson, which was an anomaly. But I don't know if they were playing cover 2 on Jenkin's side and it was just a break down in coverage.

But you couldn't be more wrong on Sensebaugh. We prefer Hamlin as our center fielder and not as a man on man coverage safety. He's never assigned to cover a WR or TE in any of the coverages we play regularly.

Sensabaugh is assigned to cover the TEs mostly, not Hamlin. Even when we blitz CBs, Sesabaugh is who's covering the WR. When we play man free coverage, Sensabaugh is the safety in the middle of the field.

Ball may be a better coverage guy because he's a corner, but he doesn't bring anywhere close to the physicality Gerald can bring.

ummm no, he finally brought some things to our defense the last few games so he gets some credit. he was horrible for a year and half and he got no credit during that time.

*sigh*

He gave up just 25 passes and 4 TDs in the past two years (excluding this last game).

Those are among the lowest given up by any safety in the game.

so, roy williams has the second most TD receptions on the team this season. you can skew stats to make a player look good but to any fan, scout and coach who has watched hamlin the over the last two years knows that he was very average at best. he never made a play that made a difference. pass break ups, stops behind the line of scrimmage, interceptions, or even just a big hit. remember his nickname is the "hammer" lol! i'll give him credit for play a few good games over the last 3 or 4. i'd like for him to keep it up and maybe even make one or two difference making plays.

Hmm, Wade just said in his PC today that while Ball played well when he was in there, you could immediately see the difference in our defense with Hamlin back there making all our checks and adjustments.

Well personally I would like to take this moment to thank Ken for breaking up the huge pass to D.Jackson. That was HUGE; if Jackson catches that it's 1st and goal or TD. And~ the big momentum swing that possibly comes with it.

Skew stats? There are four major coverage stats -- targets, passes given up, INTs, and passes defensed.

He's among the best in the league in 2 of those 4 coverage statistics. But the average Joe loves him some INTs, so he think he's terrible in coverage.
