I think Jerry wanted to hire a head coach that could/would be blamed

If Schottenheimer fails, it will all be on him. Jerry doesn't want anyone blaming Dak Prescott.
It's a shame. Brian Schottenhiemer very well may have what it takes, but he will almost assuredly leave Dallas with a bad reputation, unfairly put on him because of being saddled with Prescott.
Just as McCarthy was.
The Cowboys may be- probably are- in for a rotation of head coaches for the next four years.
But it will probably be longer than that.

Jerry does tend to hire coaches as shills for him. He is still the one who hires the assistants, acquires the players, sets team plans and goals, decides who gets extended or let go.., etc.. So that when things go down the dumper after they usually do… then firing the HC is perceived as a reset.

But really, nothing changes with him and junior still pulling the strings. And bring in the next puppet.

He didn't put that much thought into into it. Being lazy and incompetent he didn't want to look any further than what was in the building. He found his guy, a career coach who couldn't get arrested by the 31 other teams.

Jerry's done it for 30 years, hire puppets.
He won't hire a strong coach like Jimmy again, why?
To prove he was wrong all of these years? 30 years.

That’s nothing new. Blaming HCs and other mid-level people for his own sins has been Jerry’s M.O. since the mid-90s.
