I Think We’re Gonna Trade Up

Just listening to the post draft press conference. They said they had 3-4 guys targeted at #26 and there was debate on which way to go. In fact, they noted it came down to two players, one offensive and one defensive, ultimately going the latter with Mazi.

My read is that they will be focused on getting their guy on Day 2. I’m predicting they will be trading up to ensure we get the player.

They did a great job of filling holes/needs in free agency, which means they may not be so reluctant to give up picks to make a move this draft.

I think it will either be TE or IOL.
I would move up if I was running the draft, don't see that adding several late rounders would help the team as much as 2-3 really solid guys would.
I'd try and package some 5-6-7 round picks to either move up from 58 or up from round 3 to an additional round 2 pick.

With the acquisition of Cooks and Gilmore, the re-signing of LVE, etc., some needs have been addressed with pretty good players, now let's get some more higher echelon rookies...

I’d move up a few spots for any of these top 32ish players that fell.

Torrence
Porter
Mayer
Etc

But I wouldn’t give up more than a 5th. Preference would be to stand pat unless it’s for Porter.

If they had 4 players remaining, I'm surprised they didn't trade back.
- They reportedly had 2 teams that wanted to trade up.
- KC at #31 and I think the other was NO at #29.

The Cowboys 3rd round pick would only get them from #58 to about #44.

Picks 4, 5, 6 and 7 won't get them from #90 back into the 2nd round.

I'm not sure there's anyone worth trading up for in the 2nd. Not worth it enough to lose the 3rd round pick. A lot of these players being brought up are probably going to go early to mid 2nd round.

If they need to trade up, they'll do a lot better in the 3rd round.

Yea, not my preference either.

There’s like 12ish dudes I’d be happy with. Just let it fall to you.

Yeah, trying to move up significantly in the 2nd isn't easy. Those late round picks only get you a few spots. In the 3rd they move you up a lot further.

If they really want a player and think they'll get jumped, they can probably move up 1 or 2 spots with a 5th. But what are the chances? Like I said, that same pick can move you further in the 3rd.

Looking over a list of the guys still available, I feel confident that we'll have a good player sitting there at #56. I don't feel pressure to trade.

I think LaPorta is the easy guess considering he was supposedly in play at 26. If Mayer is the 1st TE off the board amd Laporta falls into the 40's I think they work the phones

I've read from a few Dallas talking heads that KC wanted Mazi Smith so Dallas stayed put and drafted him instead.

I don’t love how the 2nd round will go:

I loathe trading up,
Those top OG’s Will be long gone.
I don’t want a TE

It would take trading the rest of our picks to get in the top 5 of round 2. I suppose they could trade a next year pick, but they carry less value.

If the cowboys move up it takes their 3rd.

It’s gotta be an OG then I think. It’s really the one true need they have left. And there are day one starters available who would be great left guards.

My post wasn't meant to be a detailed movement scenario, just a general statement with some examples.
Obviously, whether you use the chart or not, teams can make whatever trade of draft picks they want, so the chart isn't an absolute, some team might make a trade that violates the chart, who knows?

But thanks for the numbers...
