I Wanna Go Mach 2

I believe the nationalfootballpost.com (W Bunting) has him projected to the Skins at 10. At least he had him there . . . .

Skins drafted their LT of the future last year in Trent Williams. Their right tackle is Jammal Brown, who's 29 years old.

Their defensive line consiste of Adam Carriker, Anthony Bryant and Vonnie Holliday. They have Orapko on one OLB spot and basically nobody else on the other side and they run a 3-4 defense.

and then there's the QB of the future thing..

Do you seriously believe they're going to draft an OT with the 10th pick of the draft ?

I never said he could not. Just said I wasn't sold on it and would've preffered we get someone who has done it.

Im still not opposed to moving Free back to right either if we find a stud LT.
Keep swinging, it cools the air.

Just throwing it out there that he is considered a top 10 pick.

Also, I think Brandt has T Smith as a top 10 pick (number 10/10, I believe) in his Top 100 ranking.

Not trying to sway you or anything, just pointing out that some reputable people think Smith is a top 10 talent, that's all.

Personally, I would probably take him there, but I also like Quinn and Dareus.

But what I like about Smith is that he's still very young, "mouldable", and I think has the potential to also play LT in a couple of years.

I forget who said to drop my pick at 209. Can't do it. I like smart QBs.

Greg McElroy scores a 48 on the Wonderlic

2/28/2011 9:03:24 AM

Clarence E. Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy scored a 48 on the Wonderlick test, just missing a perfect score of 50 according to two sources. Former Bengals punter and Harvard grad Pat McInally is believed to be the only player to record a 50.

McElroy didn't get to show his stuff at the NFL Scouting Combine because he is rehabilitating an injury he suffered at the Senior Bowl.

He probably is a top 10 talent but he still plays Right Tackle.

If Romo starts throwing lefty than it would be a good pick but right now it just doesn't make sense to take a RT.

Especially when you could trade back and get Carimi who is as safe of a pick as there is.

I didn't say he would drafted top 5, I meant he is top 5 player available. The reason I think he may not make it to #9 is the fact that there are several teams looking for QBs a head of the Cowboys and well, they all aren't going to get one. In my opinion there are three positions that carry extreme weight when drafting top 10. QB, pass rusher, and LT. Smith will be a LT before it's said and done and every team in the NFL knows this. That is why I think he may not make it to #9.

Let's take a look at the top 10:

Carolina = No
Denver = No
Buffalo = No
Cinci = No
Arizona = No.

next 5

Cleveland = No ( much, much bigger needs just about everywhere else )
San Francisco = not just no, but HELL no. 3 #1 picks on the O-line is enough.
Titans = No ( O-Line is their biggest strength )
Cowboys = Would not be a wise pick
Deadskins = No ( they're set with Trent Williams and Jamaal Brown )

Let's go to the next 5:

Texans = See the Deadskins ( Duane Brown and Eric Winston )
Vikings = See Texans and Deadskins ( McKinnie and Loadholt )
Lions = maybe
Rams = See Deadskins, Texans, and Vikings ( Smith and Saffold )
Dullpins = See Deadskins, Texans, Vikings and Rams ( Jake Long and Vernon Carey )

I ask once again, who's going after him, other than Dallas, allegedly ?

There will be trades in and around the top 10.

Could see the Lions looking to get their fragile young QB some blindside protection

I think Carimi is also o.k., but there knowledgeable posters on this forum who don't think Carimi has the athleticism to play RT and will eventually be an OG.

Anyway, to each his own. Maybe the Cowboys engineer a trade down and go a different direction.

Personally, I wouldn't mind Smith, Quinn, and Dareus at 9. I'm not really high on Prince at 9, however.

But what the heck do I know . . . . I'm a money manager not a scout. :laugh2:

'tis moi..

Nothing against him, it's just that I don't think the Cowboys should spend a pick on a QB unless it's one of this " it's an offer you can't refuse " type of deal, ie: one of the studs falling to the 3rd round or something.

I am the exact opposite. I'll take one every other year if I can develop them and fleece someone on trades. Kitna is approaching 40. We need his replacement if nothing else.

You say no alot, but don't supply who you think they will take. Buffalo, Cincy, Arizona, and Vikings all need QBs. They aren't all getting one. Pass rushers are nice, but lets face it, there aren't that many top 10 pass rushers either. I'm thinking it's possible that Nick Fairly drops out of the top 10. You aren't going to draft a 3-4 DE in the top 10. Who are they going to take when there is a franchise LT on the board? Over-draft Jimmy Smith?

If any of those teams don't see the value and don't need a LT, they trade back and guess who moves up? Someone that needs a LT and there are several that I'm betting would love to get their hands on Tyron Smith.

great analysis, agree with you completely

the biggest threat are the lions (maybe) but then the giants and the possibility that a later team (like eagles) might trade up but all in all it is reasonably safe to trade into the mid/late teens if we are going for OT.

Makes perfect sense for them, but who would they be trading with ? Forget the top 5.

6: Cleveland ? " maybe ", but I don't know if they're going to find either the stud receiver they need ( AJ Green, Julio Jones ) or the same quality defender at #13 as they would at #6 ( Quinn, Miller )..

7:Niners: doubt it. They're desperately in need of a CB and neither Peterson or Prince will last to #13. Peterson would be a Cowboy and the Texans would be all over Prince.

8: Titans: another " maybe ", depending on the QB situation at that point. This one is more feasible since their other big need is D-line and they could conceivably get one at #13 who's just about as good as #8.

9: Cowboys

10: Deadskins: I don't think they're moving out of this spot QB or no QB. They could end up with a stud DE, OLB, or even Julio Jones.

Not exactly a fertil ground to move up and, then again, why would they want to pay anything extra for Smith when they're going to have the pick of any other OT in the draft even if he's gone ?

Not Solder's biggest fan (no pun intended), but I wouldn't be terribly upset if this is the way it shook out.

lol you might want to look elsewhere for opinions then.

Man, know I know why Vlad Ducasse didnt want to play out of position at the Senior Bowl last year.

Carimi was nice enough to play some guard because they had 3 starting tackles and now people think thats becuase thats his natural position.

Ok, first of all the Vikings aren't drafting a tackle wether they need a QB or not. Let's get that out of the way.

Next: Buffalo ? They're going to get to pick ANY quarterback they want. Cincy is picking after Buffalo and if by some chance they trade or release Palmer, which I doubt they're going to do, they get top pick the next in line. Arizona is picking right after them and THEY get to choose whomever Buffalo and/or Cincy didn't pick and if they don't like the QB choices, they would NOT be picking a tackle either.

I thought that was obvious.

next:

Pass rushers are nice, but lets face it, there aren't that many top 10 pass rushers either.

Actually, the strength of this draft is the abundance of pass rushers, at both: OLB and DE. I wouldn't be surprised if about 15 of them are selected in the first round.

I'm thinking it's possible that Nick Fairly drops out of the top 10. You aren't going to draft a 3-4 DE in the top 10. Who are they going to take when there is a franchise LT on the board? Over-draft Jimmy Smith?

You're suggesting that teams in the top 10 are going to pass on Nick Fairly in order to draft Smith ?

If any of those teams don't see the value and don't need a LT, they trade back and guess who moves up? Someone that needs a LT and there are several that I'm betting would love to get their hands on Tyron Smith.

Alot of teams outside of the top 10 would love to get their hands on Tyron Smith, if he falls to them. Detroit, Jacksonville, maybe New England, definitely New York. The question is which one of them would be willing to trade up and make him a top 10 pick as you suggest ?

There's that phrase again. "find a stud <insert position>". Can't stand it.

Drafting one every year doesn't make sense. You need to showcase the prospect before you can fleece anybody and you're not going to be developing anybody if you're bringing in a new QB every year to the roster. There's not enough time or snaps. Now, every 2 years or so, then it makes more sense. I wouldn't even wait until the 7th round. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be signing undrafted FA and keep trying their luck, but in terms of " drafting " one, I'd hold off on that for now.

Kitna's replacement will be another veteran down the line IF you want the Cowboys to follow your trade suggestion, which would mean trading Stephen McGee.
