I want to change the way the draft is done...

So here is what I would like to see happen.

First, I hate seeing mediocrity rewarded. So instead of giving the team with the worst record the top pick, I say take the bottom ten teams in terms of record and at least have a lottery for the top ten picks. We could weight the lottery based on wins. For example the worst team would have 5 balls, the next 4 worse teams would have 3 the next 3 teams would have 2 balls and the last 2 would have 1 each.

I would do this for the next 10 and for the final 12. This would ensure a more fair distribution of talent.
I would have this drawing on the NFL Network in Feb. before the combines. IT would be sure to be a big draw.

Second I would have the draft held in the city of the Super Bowl winner. It would reward the fans of the winning team as well as the city itself to have such a large event in their city.

Third I would put in place a rookie salary cap. This would increase the interest on teams trading into and out of the top of the draft to acquire talent.

Fourth, I would like to see an fan interactive portion to the draft. (this idea came from this site during draft time) Where there would be an opportunity for fans of different teams express their opinion on their teams picks and have that aired on the national coverage.

Anyway, just some ideas to try and make what was once a little followed event, that is now a major off season sporting event.

Thoughts? Additional ideas?

I could agree with one through three of your suggestions.Number four makes absolutely no sense to me.That would be asking for a public relations nightmare.Think about the differences of opinion just on this forum about who to draft.Think about some of the absolute idiocy we have to endure around here. Think about the Maddenesque lunacy that we see just here on this forum and apply that on a larger national scale for the world to see.It would be an embarrassment of epic proportions.Just my opinion, but the fans should have no say so whatsoever about a teams business decisions.Your first 3 ideas were fairly good though.

Well the rookie cap wpuldn't work out to well. I mean if they get a set amount and they play at a level above that amount their rookie season then what? They would want to be paid accordingly and that is understandable and then you would have 2nd year players holding out. So not only would GM's have to worry about resigning FA's they would have to sign rookies and restructure 2nd players contracts. It would be crazy. Unless there was a rule that you must sign a 3 year min contract and can not redo your contract untill you have played 2 full seasons.

I think he means you would say if you liked the pick or not. I don't think he means we would vote on who to draft. That would be crazy. We could go and vote for the eagles to take the worst player and vise versa... lol it would be crazy.

Well, my thought was that we already have people there booing or cheering the picks so I thought that giving the rest of the fan base an opportunity to do so would be a good idea. Maybe instead of giving their opinions, we could have a national mock draft taking place at the same time with the teams fans making a selection before them. Kinda like American Idol voting maybe.

I hate the lottery idea. The NFL Draft is the only one that remains exciting without gimmicks. They are changing the only thing I would, which is shorten the time.

I'm with you on the rookie money. I think its nuts. Reward the players who have proven themselves. Not rooks.

The #1 pick is a curse when you're talking about paying a guy 60 million to a guy who's never played a down in the NFL.

Yeah, but I hate the fact the worse team in the league is rewarded with arguably the best player in the draft. JMO.

The draft setup is backward as far as it punishes success and rewards the losers. Hillary Clinton and Obama Im sure love this setup.

But having said that, in sports, it has to be that way

i got chastised for my lottery idea a while back....but i still like the idea.....but i can deal with the way it is now.

I do like two things you said

1. rookie salary cap
2. moving the draft to the site of the SB winner.....now that would be nice to see different cities get the draft.

Careful there...can you imagine if a place like Americas armpit, Philadelphia actually was hosting the draft???

Nevermind, we dont really have to worry about that do we? Wheres that trophy case?

I can live with that aspect. I'd lose interest in the Draft if it became a gimmick. Like all the conspiracy theories about the NFL fixing it so a certain team can get the exact right player. Like LeBron James to Cleveland.

keep in mind, the NFL is intentionally 'undemocratic'...in order to encourage parity, you must reward failure (high picks) and to a degree punish success (salary cap and free agency)...

otherwise you would have baseball, where the Yankees always contend and the smaller market teams are terrible...

vital to league success.

I agree...the lottery is garbage...the NBA draft is terrible

There's nothing wrong with the NFL Draft the way it is

Love the draft. Been watching since 1981 when it started on a Monday.

With that said, I think I'm ready for a change.

Like most of your ideas. Except the lottery.

I think a bidding system with a hard cap could solve a few problems.

1) Give each team a hard cap. Worst team gets 3 mil. SB Champ gets 1.5 mil.

2) Rookies can only be signed to 1 year guaranteed deals. Minimum sal would be 200k.

So in theory the SB Champ could sign the drafts best player if that player excepted 1.5 mil.
