We resign Leary and trade Collins for a young pass rushing DE.

Are there any teams out there that would match up well for this type of trade ?

Collins is good and cheap, I would think attractive to other teams.

Thoughts ???

Never going to happen. Leary is going to cost too much money and Collins hasn't proven much to get us substantially better than what we have on our roster.

Thanks for the feedback boys and girls,
I believe whatever team has his rights after his 3 year contract expires
has some power over him, as in extended him a qualifying offer ?
Would be curious on this, do the Cowboys have to let him walk without compensation after next year ?

if we sweetened the offer with more than just Collins, maybe.

The thing is that trades that involve veterans are difficult with the salary cap because team's have to absorb the whole signing bonus to clear a trade. Most teams can't do it or don't want to.

I was thinking maybe a younger DE that was still under his first contract...
Quality young player, for quality young player ???

Yes, he will be a restricted free agent in his 4th year. The Cowboys can give him a qualifying offer that would require another team to give the Cowboys a draft pick in order to sign him.

We're going to have to grow our own. And it's probably going to come in the form of more than one player. We'll upgrade the rotation with 2-3 players. For example, Tapper, some moderately priced VFA castoff like Calais Campbell or somebody like that, and then our first round pick and probably another DL somewhere in rounds 2-4.

The other area where improvement will come from, depending what we do at DB, is just by improving the press coverage overall and then blitzing more effectively like we did the last month of the season over the course of the entire year. Especially if Jaylon Smith gets in the lineup and we have options for underneath coverage. I'm surprised we didn't bring pressure from the WIL more than we did, already. That was something they were looking at Shazier for before PIT took him, and I keep expecting them to do it with Lee in the lineup. We might also bring in DBs who have some skill with blitzing to pair with Scandrick and Heath who both seem to have a knack for it.

Either way, it's going to be a process of incremental improvement. Had Lawrence not been derailed and Gregory not been a mess, we'd be developing our young pass rush in it's prime right now. As it is, we're kind of stuck spending more resources on it than we probably want to. But it's got to happen.

If the Club wants to trade for a young pass rusher...the FO must offer something real. If you want quality you must give quality. No way to pass off ordinary players and get an elite player in return. Just doesn't work that way.

Don't let em beat you up to bad about it. I think we are all looking desperately for help with that pass rush or lack there of.

Hopefully Stephen and company will leave no stone unturned . It's all this team is lacking

You don't sit with a young man and his momma and sell them on joining the Cowboy family then turn around and trade him.

And we can't sign Leary and Zach. You generally can have three big deals on your line. You have to fill the rest with guys on a first contract or serviceable vets.

The question isnt "what do we need to fix this" the bigger question is "can our staff do it, do it right, and get it done" those answers have been no, certainly not, and this is the Cowboys aint no one got time for that"
