Tally the records after 75% of the season has been played, 12 games. About 60 for the NBA where its a bigger problem.

Tell me if the Dolphins and Colts played week 17 they wouldnt do everything they can to guarantee themselves Luck, who would bring them contenders every year.

And if a team goes on a run at the end of a season like Detroit did last year they arent penalized.

Where's the idea?

Theres no motivation to lose the last 1/4 of the season. The draft position will be determined whilst the season is still going on.

If you want to stop tanking for the #1 pick just go to the lottery like they do in the NBA.

I'd prefer it if they just did it every year anyway. It adds to the integrity of the game.

That just moves the tanking up to earlier in the season instead of the end of the season.

What evidence is there that anyone is tanking right now? The Colts spent millions to try and compete with Kerry Collins. The Dolphins are keeping games close. The Rams just traded for Brandon Lloyd on an expiring contract.

Their fans are rooting for it, but the players are failing because they are terrible. Not by any moves the FO has made to "showcase younger players". Not yet at least.

Its still a weighted lottery and the biggest losers have the best chance at franchise changers.

I'm not even sure what you're arguing about here. I never suggested anyone was tanking yet. However, if you move the draft slotting to results at game 12 it would encourage the teams in contention to tank around games 10-12 if they were inclined to try and tank instead of doing it in games 14-16 like they might do now.

The lottery gets rid of the big incentive to tank because in the NBA even the worst team in the league only stands around a 20% or so chance of getting the top pick. Of course, that didn't stop Cleveland from tanking in the Lebron James draft but they were lucky enough to get him anyway only to lose him to FA later anyways.

I actually like a limited form of the draft lottery. I think it should only apply to the bottom 8 teams in the league.

We are halfway through the season and the 3 biggest contenders arent showing signs of tanking. For them to pack it in for weeks 11-13 seems far-fetched. How would it look if the Dolphins started playing JP Losman or one of the McCown brothers for a few weeks, claiming theyre trying to get a look at him, then went back to Moore for the last 4 games of the season?

That last quarter stretch is when no one pays attention to the bottom teams and where mathematically all hope is lost. Thats their chance to tank, not now. They clearly arent tanking right now.

Interesting idea.............dont think the owners would ever pass it however.

Those very early draft picks are much more valuable now, with the rookie salary cap.

Before the rookie salary cap, the Number 1 pick was a mixed blessing, because of what that rookie's salary did to the team's overall salary cap.

Given how much the value of those earliest picks have changed, yeah, it might make sense to award the earliest picks a bit differently ... such as through using a limited lottery.

So you'd be punishing teams that can't win and rewarding teams that start to win?

Basically, Carolina wouldn't have gotten the 1st pick last year and Detroit would have picked top 5 instead of in the teens?

Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Prior to this year, having the 1st overall pick was more of a burden than it was a reward. Shelling out that kind of money regardless of the player taken, I'm sure teams were just thrilled to suck all year and then look at 40M guaranteed the following spring.

I don't think any team deliberately tanks. Players may quit but I doubt it's some organized scheme to get that #1 pick when the draft is such a crap shoot as it is.

An even better idea is to have a Loser Playoffs at the end of the season, sort of like the NFL's version of college basketballs NIT tournament. The bottom eight teams play against each other. The winner gets the #1 pick. Runner-up gets #2 pick. 3rd place gets #3, and so on.

Or another idea; the entire staff and players of the leagues worst team only gets paid 75% of their salary. The remainder goes to charity.

This is a made-up by the media problem which doesn't need a solution. NFL Draft Picks - even the #1 overall - are nowhere near the sure thing that NBA top prospects are. Since Peyton Manning we've had 10 QB's selected #1 overall. The jury is still out on 3 (Newton, Bradford, Stafford), 4 were busts (Smith, Couch, Carr, Russell) and 3 are good-but-not-great (Eli Manning, Palmer, Vick).

If you look at the best QB's in the NFL right now, or of all time, you're not going to see many #1 overall picks.

I dont think you understand the idea. Im saying you determine their draft positions in the games played week 1-13.

12 games. Thats long enough to figure out whos bad, and eliminates a sham of a week 17 game. Theres no point in tanking, the draft order is already determined.
