happens to them? I read about a week ago that teams not under the cap by then face variety of punishments including loss of a draft pick, fines & the more serious voiding enough players' contracts to get a team under the cap. We've seen the Jets cutting some pretty good, but older, players Law, Fabini, etc., & additional cuts including cutting Mawae may also happen. But we've heard virtually nothing from other cap strapped teams like the Broncos, Commanders, etc. Just how seriously and how immediately will the NFL jump on these teams?

Interesting question.... on March 3 does the NFL start voiding contracts....are the affected players then free agents?

I believe there is a 5 day grace period, for you to make your own cuts. Then the NFL takes over.

Is there a method to how they select players to be cut? I mean, do they start with the lowest salaries and work there way up or is it the other way around? Do they cut 20 low scale guys or three high scale guys?

The common held perception, is that they start with the most recent contracts signed, and void their contracts. I haven't seen that confirmed in the CBA, so I'm not sure, but BigD found a quote from a GM or something, talking about the practice of the NFL voiding contracts. Maybe he can repost that later....

According to Brian Xanders a cap guy with the Falcons they have a 7 day grace period. If they are not in compliance after 7 days the NFL starts voiding their contracts starting with their lastest one signed and working backwards.

But with the cap being a limit, what would happen if a team spent more than the cap allowed? The short answer is: no team is able to. This is due in most part to the fact that teams have to have all player contracts approved by the league.

"By the first day of the new league year (which this year it's March 2) we have to be in compliance," Xanders said. "Our salary cap has to be under $78.7 million. If you're not in compliance by March 2, you have seven days to be."

And if you're not in compliance after those seven days?

"The last contracts that you signed players to automatically become void and those players become free agents until your charges do come under the cap," Xanders replied. "But that's never happened."

"It's different from the NBA where, if you go over, you have to pay a luxury tax," Beadles echoed. "In the NFL, if you're over the salary cap, then they start making contracts void.

"If you don't decide which players you don't want on your roster, the league will."

Interesting. Thank you for posting that. I guess that would me recent FAs and 2nd year players. So what happens if a guy has a signing bonus spread out over multiple years or something? I guess that just comes due on release and gets added back into the cap number, which in turn, makes you cut more guys.

Wow, I can't imagine any team putting themselves in that position. Creates too many problems.

If only I could witness the Commish telling skins players their a free agent. Oh that would be so very funny.

Thanks for the information. My brother is a die hard Commanders fan but not so antagonistic to Cowboys as many of them are. We both discuss realistically failings & good points of each of our teams, with delicacy of course. But he does believe what Washington media says & always wants my sources if I cite something he doesn't like about the Cowboys. Hence, in his view Commanders don't have cap problem that they can't solve simply by restructuring 1-2 player contracts. Will be interesting to find out if Skins can deal with the problem as will there be some bloodletting.

It might be even more interesting then usual after 3 March for some teams--FA singings & cap-related cuts. There may be lot more FAs available then previously identified. Also, if I understand correctly, signings of FAs in 07 will be much more difficult then it is this year.

Truth is, many of us have been saying it's cap armageddon for the 'Skins each year but Snyder always seems to find a way out. We'll see if it still holds true this coming year - I am amazed that they are still so far over the cap with the clock ticking so close (just 1 week).

It appears people with any knowledge of the situation, have always pointed to THIS year. Knowing the CBA might not get extended, and the ramifications that would have on a team that conducts business like the Commanders. Yes, people have been crying about it for years, but people who know, have always pointed to this year.
