If a team offered you *eight* 1st-round picks in the far, far future...

Since it's the offseason, and things are slow, I have a curious survey about psychology and delayed gratification:

(This scenario would never happen in real life, of course.)

Let's say that another NFL team wanted to trade for your team's 1# best player today, in his prime (a Brees, Brady or Rodgers-like player), (to be sent to them immediately), and offered you, the Cowboys' GM, eight 1st-round picks in return twenty years from now.....in the years 2030-2037.

Assuming that the NFL Draft system were guaranteed to remain the exact same way twenty years from now as it is today, would you agree to such a trade?

To me, the present value of that would our best player for maybe eight 6-7th rounders spread over 2012-2020.
So no.

8 first round picks ? Damn I would say do it instantly but 20 years in advance ? That's too far away in a case but one guy for 8 years of 2 first round picks sounds amazing lol we can have the top 5 pick every year

heck yeah, we would be super bowl contenders for a decade, and our best player, who would be traded in this imaginary scenario is 29 when the season starts.

I'd do it for 4 years in a row, a joke of a franchise like Oakland might accept such a trade.

Jerry's going to be 90 and wont give a damn about what is going on in 20 years.

Nevertheless, the answser is no - without hesitation. Too much time and uncertainty between now and then. You don't know what the state of the game will be or when you may want to sell the team or how high in the 1st round those picks would end up being or any number of other things. And, of course, there is the simple fact that even with all those picks there is no way to guarantee multiple super Bowls.

lol, I don't think a GM would consider it unless they were in a position like Jerry, where you know your family is going to still be running everything in 20 years.

I think Jerry would do it for the headlines alone.

I'm not sure what this will tell you about delayed gratification. If I'm the Cowboy's GM and I'm offered this deal, I likely reason that I won't be around to see those 8 1st rounders. That's not delayed gratification, but no gratification at all. I'm going to trade away today's first rounder and deprive my team the chance to improve itself by landing an impact player so that someone else's team might benefit years down the line? No thanks. Doesn't strike me as a rational decision so much as a charitable decision.

EDIT: It's even a worse deal than I realized. I'm not just giving up my 1st rounder, I'm giving up a player I know is an impact player? My best player? I'm going to go so far as to suggest that only a fool would take that offer.

That's it.....

The Patriots seem to get an extra 1st rounder every year without even doing this:)

Actually, if you're willing to begin parting with 5th -7th rounders, you can already do this annually...or close.
I think a 1st next year has a 2nd round value this year; a 1st in two years has a 3rd round value, etc. But there is a limit to how far out you can do this according to the NFL.

Nope. There are very few certainties in life.

Well, look at it this way:

Would you rather the Cowboys have Danny White or some other Cowboys player during the early 1980s, or

Ed Reed, (a 2002 pick,)
Nnamdi Asomugha, (a 2003 pick,)
Larry Fitzgerald, (a 2004 pick,)
Aaron Rodgers, (a 2005 pick,)
Antonio Cromartie, (a 2006 pick,)
Adrian Peterson, (a 2007 pick,)
DeSean Jackson, (a 2008 pick,)
Ndamukong Suh, (a 2009 pick,)

......All on your current Cowboys roster?

Ok, but you're asking me, as a fan. Try asking Tex Schramm in 1981.

D-Jax was a second round pick.

how are you going to guarantee a high pick every round, much less ensure you make all the RIGHT picks with the extras...

For all you know, we would not have gotten a single one of those players. In fact, the odds are almost 100% that we would not get most of them.

Apples and oranges.

20 years is too far away for me. So no, I wouldn't do it.

I did a fantasy history draft where, knowing what I know now, I re-did every Cowboys draft and even added in a stipulation where we started 6 months earlier than we actually did, i.e. we were able to participate in the 1960 draft as well as sign FAs before the AFL got to them. Just an exercise in "what might have been".

Anyway, knowing when a player was going to no longer be at his peak I was able to trade them to teams with a need in that area for a future high draft pick. Who wouldn't trade a 1st rounder 2-3 years from now for a guy who is 29 and had been in the last several Pro Bowls?

It enabled me to stockpile picks and trade up or down as needed and I built a team that would be nearly impossible to beat every year. The hard part was having to trade guys before I wanted to in order to make room for players I really wanted to draft but it helped me store up a lot of picks and there were years when I really needed those extra 1st rounders like when I drafted Walter Payton and Randy White.

I don't have the drafts on this laptop so I can't give any details but it was a lot of fun to build my team that way. I initially did it without making any trades, I just took players with our picks that we passed on or could have had and it was pretty cool.

If I was offered 4 1st rounders over the next 5 years for my best player I would do it but not 20 years down the road. Too much can change over that amount of time.

I would rather be the one trading away the distant future first rounders. I would trade away the next 50 first rounders after twenty years. Better win now before a comet or mega earthquake wipes out the world.

I know, but I think he's proven himself to be worth more than even most 1st-round drafted players. And he could have been picked with a first-round pick - he was available there.

This question is somewhat similar to, "Would you rather have $20,000 next year, or half a million dollars thirty years from now?"
