If Barber or Anderson can't go .. T. Choice as every-down back ..

Just thinking ..

1. The great blogger Vela was talking about how D. Anderson's injury last year hurt us so much. (see below) ... so why is Deon still on special teams and risking losing his freaking head ?!, when he was/is a ++factor on offense? (And .. we have only Julius Crosslin (?) on the practice squad to replace him?)

To quote Vela late last season:

"I’ve written on many occasions the past few years about Dallas’ search for a fullback to replace Daryl Johnston. Some stats in the newest - and best — Scientific Football ‘08 illustrate how Deon Anderson’s shoulder injury hampered the Cowboys’ passing game, particularly the ways the team used Jason Witten, and how Anderson’s return can improve them.

We know that the Cowboys have been a two tight end heavy team the past few years. I doubt this is by design. The ’90s Cowboys relied mostly on what the team now calls its 21 package, with a fullback, a tailback, one tight end and two receivers.

The Bill Parcells Cowboys would have preferred this as well, but could not locate an adequate fullback in the draft. Lousaka Polite stuck around a while but never had the pop to excel as a lead blocker. The team had some success converting Oliver Hoyte from linebacker to fullback but he lacked the speed and receiving skills to play extensively.

The Cowboys appeared to have found their man when they drafted Anderson last year, but he went on IR after only four starts with a rotator cuff injury. Without him the team had to rely a lot more on their 12 packages, which have one back and two tight ends.

From this look the Cowboys use a traditional tight end, who lines up next to an offensive tackle, and an F-back, who flexes up and down the line, eventually lining up as a second tight end on the line; on a wing outside the first tight end; or in the backfield as a lead blocker." ....

2. My second thought: Felix got impaled trying to block on Tony's INT, I mean, run over, in one of the only plays when he had to stay in and protect ...

My thought is that T. Choice will be our every down RB, in case Barber or Anderson can't go. Tashard was exceptional in preseason as protector for the QB, made good choices about who to block, and blew them up when he could ...

I kind of don't want to be chicken little, but Barber is nicked, and Deon Anderson is a freaking nut and will probably get injured running into a concrete pylon, or be suspended for fighting, or something this year especially playing every offensive down and kickoffs (punts too?) .. so we should all be worried and thinking about this scenario ...

No dis on Felix, but I wonder if Tashard will be a lot more of a factor this year than we draft finks thought ... Tashard may be a FB, if not RB, in packages, in either case ...

Any thoughts, fears, hopes about Tashard? He seems to be real stout, and he will probably have to shoulder a hell of a lot of the load one way or the other ..

Felix misses one block and now Choice is the better blocker?

So i take it you missed the play where Felix correctly identified the blitzer and took him completly out giving Romo the time he needed to make a deep pass donw the field.

You may not want to be chicken little, but you are.

I don't think there's a doubt on anyone's mind that Choice is a better blocker than Felix. That's a no brainer.

But missing a block doesn't mean Felix is a bad blocker.

Maybe its me, but i think that as a RB if you can get a helmet on a blitzer and stop him then your a good blocker. Jones can do that, Choice can do that. There both good blockers. IMO but meh, what do i know, im just fan :p

OK has anyone seen Felix protect? His "one-play" audition was pretty bad.

On this board there were worries about his blocking, per draft scouts if not the press. He got no stars either way in the preseason for it ... JG wanted him in routes, not protection .. so he skated with an "incomplete" at best in preseason.

On the other hand, Tashard tore blitzers up in preseason, when he got the chance. Did you guys watch second halfs of games?

THE MAIN POINT is that Deon Anderson is the only Cowboys starter still risking his neck on kickoffs (did I miss anyone?)

THE MAIN POINT NUMBER 2 is Deon was such a plus-offensive tool last year per statisticians, according to Sporting News (what did I say above?) our passing game went downhill without him . ... He's shown a penchant for injury, college then pro. And he's a funny guy but a kind of knucklehead/hothead as he barely missed a fight-penalty on kickoff coverage Sunday. He's a torpedo on special teams but why doesn't Wade gently reserve him for offense, when he's the ONLY FULLBACK on the team to begin with?

1 play audition? I saw him pick up two blitzes. One he did a great job, the other he got owned.

I saw him block well in the preseason. Not sure where you made your idea up from, but I disagree.

Did anyone see Bush jump out of the way of a blitzing LB? The hit caused Brees to throw a pick, and Bush looked absolutely pathetic. I can't believe the guy can't pick up blitzes at this point in his career. Makes me glad we have hard working Felix on this team.

No matter who is featured, Felix will be on that field plenty, trust me.

I hope so. I'd like to see The Barbarian and Felix on the field at the same time more.

Actually, this did happen at least once that I know of.

If they were to do this more often, I think defenses would get used to it, and wouldn't know what's coming at anytime. But if you do this once a game, they know to pay careful attention to him when he's in at the same time as Barber.
