If Harbaugh Were Coaching Cowboys/Garrett Coaching 49ers.....

Not trying to turn this into a bash Garrett thread, but let's say the roles were reversed Garrett was in San Franscisco and Harbaugh was here in Dallas what would the records be for the respective teams?

About the same. Harbaugh came into a great situation with San Fran. They just loaded up on OL, had a fantastic running game to lean on, a stout defense whose only concern was the secondary and plenty of cap room so they proceeded to go out and lock up 3 free agents that turned out to be very, very solid for them/ Not to mention they had very high draft picks, taking Aldon whose a complete freak of nature and will probably be the most talented OLB in the NFL once Ware slows down.

On the contrary our OL was abysmal, our defense leaked like a sieve, we couldn't pressure the Quarterback to save our lives and we were in salary cap hell. We had just made several major cuts and instead opted to see exactly where we were at this season so we could turn this baby around. The Niners have a lot of young talent and needed much less guesswork coming into the season. They're a damn good football team just based on talent alone.

I know Jimmy did it but that was a different time. Right now, I just don't see our organizational culture being conducive to a college coach coming in here, completely overhauling the mental make-up of the team and taking us to a Championship game.

There's always someone lurking.

But I do think Garrett can do it over time.

Just don't know if Garrett can turn this team, or any Cowboy team. Just seems like too often we fail to recognize exactly which needs must be addressed asap combined when signing an inadequate player to start cause he comes dirt cheap. Admit Kosier came dirt cheap to become a starting OG, but that's because Parcells recognized his talent.

OTOH, last year we went thru a long lockout which certainly hindered our ability to fully evaluate/develop the players we drafted, signed as undrafted FA, or those vet FA we signed. So it entirely possible that with a full offseason where Garrett along with scouting department has the time to evaluate/develop now only players already on this team but other teams around the NFL who could really help us, Garrett certainly deserves this year. How much Jerry will assit him, or get in the way, is something else again.

About the same really. Though I don't know how well Garrett does with Alex Smith as QB.

I'd say Cowboys 6-10 and Niners 11-5.

I think Harbaugh would've made us about 3 games better at least.

We would've beat the Jets, Lions, and Cardinals at the very least with him as our coach.

If Garrett was in San Fran there is no way he could've done what Harbaugh did. He isn't a good enough playcaller to mustar up anything out of that offense.

JG makes it very difficult for Romo. Smith would struggle mightily with JG at the helm.

Boys 11-5
SF 6-10

The thing I noticed about the Niners is that they were fundamentally sound in their scheme and their tackling and their approach to the game.

That's coaching.

Now I think Garrett will get there, but Harbaugh was a coach, albeit in college. Garrett had never been a coach prior to the Dallas gig. He's trying to establish a football culture in the midst of Hollywood Dallas.

Harbaugh is in a different football culture, making his situation much easier.

I can't really say how Harbaugh would do here because Jerry Jones is still the owner. But I don't know if Garrett has the same success if he's in San Francisco.

Demarco Murray would have lead the NFL in rushing, and Romo would have had around 2 INT's. We would have lost to GB in the Divisonal Rd by a field goal.

Alex Smith would have thrown for the same 3,100 yds, and 16-17 INT's. Gore would have been hurt, and Vernon Davis would have been a primary blocking TE. SF would have the 14th pick in the upcoming draft.

:)

I don't think i've ever seen a coach manage games as well as I saw Harbaugh do in only his 1st year.

That team, especially his offense, was sooooo detailed.

there is a reason why harbaugh is in SF and not her in dallas ... ill give you one guess who that reason is.

If Harbaugh was coaching this team, they may have had the same results. Different players, plus he would have had to keep Campo. Can't see Harbaugh and Jerry working together.

It depends how much credit you give Harbaugh for SF's TO differential. Personally, I think he did a great job curbing Alex Smith's interceptions, and he did little to improve how effectively that young defense takes the ball away. Someone in SF gets credit for putting that secondary together for this season, but I'm not sure how much credit for that goes to the coach.

jerry? ;)

Jason Garrett would be preparing the 49ers for the Super Bowl right now and Dalas' Head Coach, Jerry Jones, would be sitting in Mobile AL wondering if he should keep the recently-demoted Jim Harbaugh as his backup QB for 2012.

I don't know...it's hard to say.

Harbaugh inherited a couple of key elements that I believe fit his coaching style very well that I don't think he would have got here.

I believe in SF he got a far superior Offensive line, especially where the running game is concerned. That makes it a lot easier to play mistake free football when you can do that. I am not sure he could have got that here.

Also he took over a team with a pretty dang good defense already in place that he was able to help get improved.

I don't believe, and I can't imagine there are any people here who would believe, that the Cowboys defense would have given him anything close to the same thing.

A really good, ball control, mistake free running game combined with that defense will allow a young coach to over come and do a lot of things.

In Dallas he'd have had a team that is more built, currently, to be a passing team and I don't know that it would have worked as well for how he wants to coach, or appears to want to coach anyway.

So it's tough to say.

I think the Cowboys could have probably been 8-8, as they were, maybe as good as 10-6 but I don't know that it would have been much better than that.

Now on the other hand I think that Garrett would have been in trouble with his style of offense in San Fran.

He wouldn't have the receiving core there that he does here and he certainly wouldn't have had the QB play that he enjoys here.

Make no mistake about it I don't think Smith is a terrible QB but I think he's exactly what you saw this year. An above average QB who can drive the bus, manage a game, and avoid mistakes as long as he's got a quality defense and a really good running game around him.

In a passing minded system like the one Garrett has I think Smith would be in a whole lot of trouble.

Doubt it ... i think Garrett would realize his players strengths and change his philosophy to maximize those strengths. (Defense and running game)
