What are you mainly going to use the computer for?


Big difference between a computer for web surfing, a computer for gaming, computer for work, etc...

Keep your head down, and keep your feet dry. Keep your weapon clean.

I know what I'm looking for hardware wise just looking for the best deal I can get.

There are some places that will build one to suit you. really in this day and age you do not have to do it yourself.
Motherboard and video card are really the only things that there will be any real debate on. HD, Memory, etc are all pretty well known now. Audio would be the only other area that might be some choices to make.
Frankly you probably would be just as well off getting a good deal on a high end PC complete and ready to go.

I'll probably just stick with my usual buy a Dell, with my company discount, and just upgrade the video and sound cards.

The main reason I stopped building my own is I got tired of paying out of my own pocket to replace parts. A warranty is a good thing.

Most warranties cover a year. Parts rarely break within that time.


I have an alienware computer (bought it when I was making money) that I've had for like 6 years and I've never had anything go wrong with it.

The dvd writer in my Dell I bought a little over 6 months ago failed and if I didn't have a warranty I would have paid out of pocket to replace it. I paid maybe $100 extra for a 3 year warranty. Money well spent.

I wouldn't buy any other brand but Dell. However I buy their business class line not the consumer line. I order all of the equipment for our office so I can get some good deals.

The only way I will ever own a dell again is if it is given to me.

Bought a dell about 5 years ago and had the hard drive, DVD drive, and screen go out on it in a period of 2 years.

Didn't buy the warranty because I thought $1500 would buy a computer that would last. Also, their laptop warrantys were like 250-300 or something ridiculous.

Two of my friends bought similar models around the same time, all had problems. One them just quit so he sent it in for repairs and when he got it back it worked for a while and then quit again. They tried to tell him whatever the problem was, it wasn't covered and he needed to pay to get it fixed. He told them to keep it and bought a new computer. Other fiend had a his HD go out.

More recently, buddy of mine bought a dell and after about 9 months he had a power issue. Sent it to dell for repairs, he didn't buy the warranty but was willing to pay whatever the cost would be if it wasn't nuts. They sent him a bill for $400 and told him his motherboard went bad. He went to plug the computer in and still had the problem. Evidently who ever did repairs didn't power the thing on before working on it or else they would have noticed THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE COMPUTER, it was the power cable that had gone bad.

Dell is nothing more than scam IMO. Not to mention their reps are just so friendly and have the most American names ever despite having an almost inaudible accent.

Michael Dell better not let me see his ***, ever.

That's why I buy a corporate model. I had problems with the consumer brands. The support is much better and the support reps speak english.
