My 1st rd draft strategy would be
1. Ramsey
2. Trade down
3. Tunsil
If Ramsey is there I take him. If not I try to trade down with Shaq Lawson as my target and Vernon Hargreaves as my fall back plan.
If unable to find a trade partner I take Tunsil.
If it's Ramsey the rest of my draft would look like this.
1. Ramsey
2. Joseph
3. Nassib
4. Perkins
4. Ridgeway
If I trade down it would be in the 10 range picking up a 2nd.
1. Lawson
2, Kendall Fuller
2. Joseph
3. Boyd
4. Perkins
4. Ridgeway
If I trade down but miss Lawson
1. Hargreaves
2. Ogbah
2. Joseph
3. Boyd
4. Perkins
4. Ridgeway
If unable to find a trade partner
1. Tunsil
2, Kendall Fuller
3. Sua Cravens(SS)
4. Tapper/Blair
4. Ridgeway
I want to accomplish a few things. Replace Carr and Church and free up a ton of cap space. In the last example I rid myself of Free too. That is a whole lot of cap space this year and next. With that cap space I sign Fred to an extension with a frontloaded contract helping the cap in future years. Next year I extend Martin also with a frontloaded contract. By signing them early and giving them more upfront I hope to sign them to a team friendly loooong term deals. In 3 or 4 years Romo and Witten will likely be done and that will also be a huge amount of cap space. I also want to add a DE but would settle for a rotational type if necessary. I want to add another DT as well. I want a RB to groom. As a luxury, in one example I drafted a no 2 receiver. In the 6th I am looking for a LB, a G and a couple of projects. Maybe a small school pass rush specialist that is passed on because he is weak against the run. Maybe a WR that is one dimensional but could be used in specific packages.
I know some people want a QB now but I think it is too early to spend a premium pick on a QB with the length and amount of Romo's remaining contract. There will be upgrades available after final cuts and Moore deserves a shot for now. I would use a late 1st on a QB in 2018 draft. After Cle drafts a QB I think Mccown would make a good backup for us to compete with Moore. Foles and Glennon could also be had if we are interested and willing to get creative.
I know some would want Zeke and I get it but next years draft is loaded with RB's and a guy like Perkins or Prosisse or Williams would be a great no 3 option and possible future starter. I don't think a premium pick needs to be spent on a RB right now.
I know some would want Bosa and I agree we need DE but we specifically need a pass rush specialist and I am not too sure Bosa would be that. Some are saying he is already near his ceiling as well. We have some good pieces and a lot of capitol wrapped up at the position already and a rotational piece for now would be suitable until we find out if Gregory is going to wash out or not.
I am on the Ramsey train and have been but there is a part of me that wants Tunsil. Having an OL of 5 young studs that can grow together and form the nucleus of an offense for the long haul would put us in an enviable position. It could prolong Romo's career and make average RB's look spectacular.
I know it would seem impossible to keep the 5 O-linemen together for the long haul but I have already pointed out how we could extend Fred and Martin with frontloaded long term contracts. Collins could be kept as well since Romo and wittens big contracts will be ending in a few. We would have Tunsil for at least 4 and possibly 5 since he would be a first rd pick.
If we could do this then next year we would have much fewer holes. Probably LB unless Mcclain becomes a model citizen or Damien Wilson or Hitchens makes a leap. Possibly WR. Maybe another CB if Claiborne doesn't improve. But we would be in a much better situation than we are now.
That's what I would do.
