If I were Jerry Jones, this would be my thought process:
I needto hire a head coach that will give this team that one thing that can really elevate it to the next level because the Cowboys are prime to win now. But this team needs direction on both offense and defense, so which unit, if elevated helps the team most. Or put another way, which unit can stand to be much more elevated than the other? Well, my defense did implode, but a stronghold by the previous coach really contributed to that. In fact, the defense is much farter along than the offense, and it has much more veteran-player leadership to rely on than does the offense. And the defense has played to consistent heights before, and whoever I hire as the net head coach wasn’t even here to do that. And when we recently entered the playoffs, that defense showed up pretty solid for such a meaningful game.
Now the offense, well, this unit has shown great volatility in the post-Bledsoe era. Romo is good but very raw. The passing game is good but lacks directions: the TEs don’t know whether to play FB, RT or TE; the RBs never know which one is meant to carry the ball ; and the OL has had more holes than a rotting piece of Swiss cheese from Green Bay (aside: LIKE MY LITTLE DIG ON Rivera? : ). So maybe, just maybe what this team needs to do is focus on masking this offense less volatile, to elevate the offense to new heights. With a solid defensive coordinator, the defense can be put back on track towards playing in top form. But the offense really needs direction. And perhaps the head coach needs to be offensive-minded so that the team can know it that it will win or die with its QB. And this team is willing to do that because they believe in Romo, have rallied arund him, and have trusted him to lead them before.
And this QB, Tony Romo, really needs a coach that can help take his game to new heights. And only an offensive-minded coach – whose specialty knows how to groom young, promising QBs, would be best for that task. So I’m thinking “Norv Turner”. Turner can help Romo (and even Garrett) along. Sure he has flaws, but so do the other candidates I’ve interviewed. But when looking at their strengths, no candidate other than Turner brings to the table what this team needs most, and that is the ability to elevate the QB, and the rest f the offense in kind, to the same level of play that the defense can produce, provided I find them the right defensive coordinator.
So my decision has been made; Norv Turner it is. Now, on to the task finding the right defensive coordinator.
