If I'm Wade Phillips and my job is on the line - gotta cut?

You know Coach Phillips is a nice guy, he rarely blames anyone on field or especially in the press conferences, but......

If I'm him and my current job and legacy as a head coach is on the line, I gotta cut the guys that just constantly show they can't get it done.

Procter might be a good guy and in the wrong type of oline (he's not a massive mauler like most of our guys) but he is just not getting it done.

Stanback is not getting it done even in pre-season. His roster spot is too important to use for another project year, especially if you have a young up and comer in Ogletree that seems to consistently make plays. Doubt we can afford to keep 6 WR, and what for anyway? He doesn't flash much on KR and hasn't caught many passes in 3 years of pre-seasons.

Brown. I know this guy has been moved back and forth between cb and safety I believe, but he gets eaten up out there. Is he practice squad eligible still?

Sometimes I think it sends a better message to cut these guys earlier than later, if you pretty much KNOW they aren't gonna be on your 53. I know if you suffer a freak injury in pre-season game 4 you would wish you had them, but if I'm Phillips and my job and legacy are somewhat on the line, I want this teams attention this year. No more time for Mr. Nice Coach!

Review the tape and show a few folks the door. Give other guys a chance to step up in the 2nd string rotation.

Maybe I'm just pissy about the way this team loses, but it is hard to hear (watch) game after game where they seem to dominate in the main areas and then penatlies and stupid plays cost us big time. Bad snaps, fumbles, missed assignments, and penalties. It is the coaches job to get rid of the usual culprits. From the sounds of it, we should have been up another 7 points in the first half, and then gave game away a the end. Perfect learning opportunity as this was pre-season. Last year we missed out on playoffs by 1 game, all it takes is one of these "should have wons, and gave it away type games".

I know it is pre-season, but Phillips has to cut the guys that are gonna cost him, and find some solid backups, that is what pre-season is for! Hope this oline from Buffalo will work out well, will allow us to carry only 9 oline I hope so we have space to find a backup at other positions or bring in another veteran if needed.

Man our draft class is getting banged up bad. Major red shirt year! Hopefully Jason is ok, and Hamlin too, and that Hodge and QB get back to practice soon as they need it.

Cut Witten for sure, he was outplayed by John Phillips. What a scrub.

As they come to mind:

Pat Watkins - Penalty machine and a poor football player. He's a tough cut because Mike Hamlin is hurt and DeAngelo Smith has done little though. I'd almost be ready to call a Tra Battle or a Keith Davis to keep this guy off of the roster.

Cory Procter - Just can't play. He had the "versatility" thing working in his favor before, but now he can't seem to snap the football as a center. Get Duke Preston some serious reps and get him out of here.

Courtney Brown - Nothing to say really. He can't play.

Stanback - Waste of a roster spot. Offers little as player right now and isn't developing because he can't stay healthy long enough to. How long can the Cowboys go without admitting they've just wasted a lot of time on this guy?

You know, I thought about Watkins after posting that. He does make a bunch of bad penalties and has inconsistent play at DB.

Good special teamer, BUT I think he can be upgraded in the future.

He has cost us a few times in important plays.

On the bubble.

Watkins will make the team because he's a veteran who plays good special teams and can provide depth in the secondary. In fact, Dallas let Keith Davis go so that they can keep Watkins (they had to pick just one of the two similar players). While Davis was relatively better at special teams, Watkins was relatively better as a safety. And since he can also play specials, this is precisely why he'll continue to be on the roster.

In a mere six days, all those guys will be cut.

In the meantime, we need a bunch of scrubs to play our last preseason game.

I agree, particularly with the Hamlin (rookie) wrist injury and Hodge out for extended periods (supposed to be special teams ace) that Watkins makes the team. Can he be upgraded though? Does Watkins have an upside. I pretty much think we've seen his top game, I hope I'm wrong, but I think we'd have seen another gear from him if there was one by now. Isn't it his 4th season?

Just think he costs us sometimes by boneheaded stuff. Which was the point, about all players listed. Consistently at wrong place at wrong time in terms of costing Dallas in important circumstances.
