If it was still the early nineties would Dak or Mahomes be playing in the NFL?

Back then the NFL was still real football. Quarterbacks had to be willing to take a hit while standing in and delivering a perfect pass that often made the difference in the game(s).
Not just Dak or Mahomes; would Lamar Jackson, Bryce Young, Jalen Hurts or any of the more mobile quarterbacks in today's game be playing still?
Would they even have been drafted?
In the NFL of the early nineties and before, the physical toll playing quarterback took on players caused teams to shy away from smaller guys because their mobility would disappear as the hits they took began to take their toll on them.
Nowadays the NFL penalizes any player who gets too physical when tackling a quarterback so much that they are basically playing touch football.
So why are quarterbacks still considered the highest valued player on a team?
Let's face it; the quarterback is now the easiest position to play in the NFL.

I believe Mahomes would be because his arm talent is out of this world and his athleticism translates more to escape ability than scrambling. Remember Fran Tarkenton wasn't a big guy but wow could he escape the rush, and he was one of the most prolific passing qb's in the history of the game. Dak on the other hand... not so much. He has never had much escape ability and we have seen how the hits have affected him. As for arm talent; he doesn't have a strong or accurate arm. I firmly believe that if he played for any other team than Dallas, he would be 2nd string at best except for the bottom feeding teams, and that includes The Boys as bottom feeders. Dak should be 2nd string here but the mumbling idiot has got his head up Dak's rear.

If Mahomes had a good enough oline to protect him during this more physical era, Mahomes individual talent level would still enable him to compete for championships.

On the other hand, Dak could be surrounded by the best coaching AND personnel support but still spit the bit come playoff time. Totally incapable of beating 4 straight playoff teams regardless of era or circumstance.

I believe Mahomes could have played in any decade and would have been successful. As for Prescott, can't say the same thing about him. I believe he would have gotten smoked by defenses in preseason games!!!!!!!!!! If he came out of college in the Troy heydays, there is no way he sniffs the field playing for the Cowboys.

I know this is another GOTCHA DAK thread but... I mean... for gosh sakes, the critical thinking skills have run off to the hills. Screaming all the way.

I think 90% of today's quarterbacks greatly benefit from the elimination of the old intentional grounding rules. The 'out of the pocket' rule saves all of the quarterbacks in the league now.

These questions are so dumb lol. If those QBs played back then, they simply are playing under the rules that have always been in place. It's all they know. People love these hindsight arguments and how hard and difficult the past was and how easy it is now.

The game evolves. Have you not noticed? The QB's in the early 1990's didn't play in the same environment as those in the 1970's, who didn't play in the same environment as those in the 1950's. NFL teams can't stagnate. They have to find ways to use talents to their fullest.

Players also adapt. 2025 QB's didn't make up the rules, they just play under the rules others created.

The point is that quarterbacks are paid to play a position that was once revered.
Now it's just a touch football league, but they still get paid based on what is not required of them anymore.
I don't think most of the guys I named would have even been drafted back then.

If you want a refresher on what it was like back then you can find the Aikman 11 sack game against the Eagles on YT.

If you really want to go down the rabbit hole watch the infamous Prescott 6 sack game as well.

The differences across the board are stark.

Huh? Mahomes would not have been drafted yet tall pieces of doo-doo like Trent Dilfer were taken number 6 in the 1st round of the 1994 NFL draft. So using the op's logic Trent Dilfer is better than Mahomes.
