If Jake Long tears his knee on Thursday, does that mean Miami can pick someone else on Saturday, or is this their official pick even if he dies between now and then?

He'd still probably be better than what they have now. Come on, they won one game to prevent a shutout. :p:

Depends on how much of his contract is incentive based. If he's dead, he probably won't meet them.

What part of "signing bonus" says incentive to you?

He didn't get a 30 million signing bonus, he got 30 million "guaranteed."

Was he alive when he signed the GUARANTEED part of the contract?

I assume he was, but he looked rather lifeless in the PC and the word is his feet are pretty dead slow.

Bottom line, they lose the pick and they lose the signing bonus. I may be wrong, but i doubt it. They may not lose all the guaranteed cash, but who cares if he dies? The tragedy of losing the guy would make fans forget about the cap. except this thread starter:p:

So if the Rams in ten minutes announce they have signed Longs son, then the falcons an hour later say they have signed Matt Ryan...at what point does the draft on saturday become a farce? I cant believe they let miami hold a press conference four days BEFORE the draft with the GUY they just signed.

Can they agree to an official contract? I mean Miami doesn't own his rights just yet. I understand the concept that Miami can select him with 100% certainty, so therefor they could lock themselves into it, but can someone ellaborate on this?

Also, just for argument's sake, what if the Dolphins got cought in a Spygate like scandal (1-15, i know i know), they forfeit the pick, but have signed the contract with Long. Is it void?

I don't think so. Even though the contract is signed, I don't think it's binding until it's approved by the league. I think that is why the Rams can't go ahead and negotiate with the next pick.

they'd probably just take the following years pick.

As far as signing the player, who knows. As some have pointed out this deal has been done earlier then past deals with #1 guys so it really hasn't been a thought. From what I have heard, the contract is done. Someone on ESPN said it was like 50 pages long because it had lockout circumstances and such. From that, I would guess its all signed and at this point, Jake is theirs no matter what.
