It seems like he fits the mold better than anybody right now, other than Bill Cowher. And I can't see Bill Cowher in Dallas.

I gotta agree. No more re-threads. You can't win the Indy 500 with re-threaded tires.

We need NEW!!! Ala Payton, Lovie Smith, etc, etc.

He can improve the D and Bring a player or two with him.

Wade Phillips (born June 21, 1947 in Orange, Texas) is the current defensive coordinator for the National Football League's San Diego Chargers and the former head coach of the Denver Broncos where his record was 16-16, and the Buffalo Bills where he was 29-19 and led the Bills to the playoffs in 2 out of 3 seasons. His winning percentage as a head coach is a very respectable 56.25.

He is considered one of the great defensive minds in football.[citation needed] Wade is the son of former NFL coach Bum Phillips. Phillips' most successful coaching stop was at Buffalo. He always kept the team competitive and in the playoff hunt. A stunning loss to the Titans in the 1999 playoffs haunted Phillips for the rest of his time at Buffalo and the team never fully recovered. His recent success as the Chargers' defensive coordinator and his desire to be a head coach again has prompted some rumors that he may get his wish soon

go to the playoffs tweice in 3 yrs, go 10-6, 11-5 and 8-8 in Buffalo, a team without a huge amount of talent and major cap issues at the time

we could do alot worse

David

anything will be better than Jerry hiring another yes-man(a la Campo) with jerry coaching from the owner's box
this should be an interesting couple of weeks..

He would need a young offensive guru, ala Jason Garrett.

I'm not totally against Phillips. I mean, he would make our defense sooooooooo much better.

But I think there are better options out there...and by better, I mean more promising options.

i could coach that chargers defense with all the talent they have, look the guys 60. no thanks, the new wave is young assistants, lovie smith, payton, mangini, i dont want a 60 yo

I agree with the alot worse line for sure and I won't be upset.

Although, there are a few others I would rather have, I would take him just to see what he could do with our defense.

But... what happens to our offense, who does he have ties with and what kind of offense did he run in Buffalo?

We could also do a lot better

I personally would be very blase' about such a hire. I don't believe this is the way we should go.

Just for the record, Bill Belichick was a re-tread in 2000, Tony Dungy was (arguably) a re-tread in 2002, Dick Vermeil and Dan Reeves were re-treads in 1997, Mike Holmgren was a re-tread in 1999, and Bill Parcells was a re-tread in 1993. All six have been to the Super Bowl in the last 10 years.

who cares how old the guy is as long as they are a good coach and win...

all things being equal, I agree...but the main thing is to get somebody to maximize the talent we have

oh and San Diego doesnt have THAT much mroe talent than we do on defense...everywhere Phillips goes, excellent defense follows

I live just outside of Buffalo and I can remember Wade. He took over a team that had lots of underacheivers on it. He was stuck with Flutie and Johnson as QB's and a sagging team that had never gotten over the 4 straight SuperBowl losses. He never reallly got a fair shake because he replaced a coach (Levy) who was loved by all. He didn't have Marv's outgoing personality and people couldn't relate to that. But his defenses have always been good.
