...and get 4th round picks for each, then why the he11 are we just releasing a superior talent like Glover. Could we really not have traded him for a 3rd or 4th yesterday? I just don't understand that move. We are still far enough under the cap that we could have held onto him until the draft and it would not have hampered FA one bit. Am I missing something here?

Didn't we have to pay Glover a roster bonus? Could be wrong.

Sure we are far enough under the cap to handle it...but do you really want to pay multiple millions of dollars to a player you will not have on the roster for a 4th round pick?

I forgot about that roster bonus, but that brings up another question. Why do contracts that way if its going to prevent you from attempting to tade a player that still has lots of value like Glover? Imagine what our draft would look like with an extra 3rd round pick used on Max Jean-Giles.

He's a Tub-O-Lard. And now he's an Eagle... which makes him worse. :)

contracts are a give and take between the player and management. star players get their contracts more to their liking.glover had his bonus on a date that intentionally made it impossible to hold him. lots of star players have their contracts like that. thats why you don't see any big stars in june anymore

I agree 100%. I am so tired of cutting players and not getting anything in return. Why don't we shut our mouths as to whom we are releasing, then try and get some trade value for them instead of just sucking *** and getting nothing.

One of the reasons to cut Glover early was out of respect for what he has done for the Cowboys....it allowed him to go out and get a nice contract in free agency.

A few things wrong with your post

1st Glover was due a bonus and if we paid it would have taken a cap hit on it to release im, no big deal to you maybe but spend 1 million dollar on nothing? Why would Jerry want to do that

2nd Glovers salary was waaaay to large no team would have taken it on.

3rd Eagles didnt trade those guys for a "4th round pick each"

They traded Hollis Thomas to New Orleans to move up nine spots in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. So they gave Thomas and their 4th for a 4th 9 spots higher

They also shipped guard Artis Hicks to Minnesota for a swap of fourth-round picks and an additional sixth-round selection. So for Hicks they got a round 6 pick and moved up 12 slots in rd 4

...and the more respect you show the players, the more attractive a destination Dallas becomes for free agents. Having a rep for treating players well is a strong asset.

Players like Glover and Coakley earned their early outs by being great professionals while they were here by their actions.

My understanding is that was exactly why we let him go.....the bonus

because it frees up money in free agency and also gives you maneuverability with signing draft picks

First of all, as has been mentioned, we would have had to have paid him $1.5 million on March 11 if we hadn't released him. Secondly, Glover's base salary was $4.5 million, and he was in the final year of his contract. A player isn't very tradeable when he's overpaid and in the final year of his contract, and every team knows you'll release him sooner or later because he's overpaid and doesn't fit in your scheme anymore. Every other team knew he'd probably get cut before March 11, so nobody wanted to trade anything for him. And it would have been foolish for us to pay him $1.5 million in the faint hope that someone might trade for him before we finally cut him. We certainly would never have gotten a third- or fourth-round pick for him.

As has been mentioned as well, Hicks and Thomas were part of trade packages to move up in the fourth round. Their actual trade value was much lower. And they both had some trade value because they were under contract for the minimum salary -- Hicks for four more years at the minimum. If they were due inflated base salaries, nobody would have traded for them, either.
