Honestly I think he sees someone that can communicate well with people and possibly motivate them whether or not it will happen in big moments remains to be seen.

Big Mike absolutely could not prepare or motivate the team in big moments he absolutely fell on his face we could beat the tarnation out of bad teams but when the rubber hit the road nobody would play for him.

In football that's really what it comes down to is the guy willing to walk through the fire sacrifice his body and go the extra mile to win the Super bowl.
Most players today have been coached by their agents to play it safe don't go all in don't sacrifice your body extend your career as long as you can a Super bowl really means nothing compared to adding two or three years onto your career by making business decisions.
The trick of the light will be if shottenheimer can get these guys to want to win a Super bowl and lay it all on the line for him his dad certainly got guys motivated and got them to play hard they had some bad luck field goals fumbles but his teams did play hard and that's all I ask for at this point some good football.

Hey I'm certainly not saying I'm going into the season with complete confidence that he's going to walk on water and transform the whole situation in 15 minutes.

But if he can be as good as his father the hire is not a disaster we will have some good football to watch if we make it to an NFC championship game like his father made it to the AFC championship game that is an accomplishment that nobody has made in 30 years.

What remains to be seen is if Jerry will give him the tools to have a puncher's chance of being successful

That is a great part of what we need everyone to buy in and play hard to the end.

Mike McCarthy could not accomplish that teams just came out flat in the playoffs he was horrible in big moments.

The only thing worse was players like diggs making business decisions absolutely disgusting I would have yanked that guy off the field and fired him immediately
 
Schotty seems to be having the time of his life being the Cowboys new HC. A lot of joking with the players and with the media. He seems very relaxed and cheerful. He comes off like one of the guys. He gives off a “soft” impression. Nothing about him so far gives me much confidence he can build a tough, physical team. Only time will tell.

He was a good coach who did well in the regular season and horrible when it mattered. That’s exactly the problem we’ve had here. With that said, Brian shouldn’t be judged on the performance of his father.

But what exactly are we blaming him for though? If his kicker missed 3 kicks is that on the coach?

Well, you haven't stated his issues other than his record. What made him a bad coach in the playoffs? I've yet to have anyone tell me. All they say is "he couldn't win the big one" which that's a valid reason for a player but for a coach?

I don't know. If you don't make it to a SB, does that mean you're horrible? He made that playoffs 13 times. If you don't get to a SB, that is automatically 13 losses. A lot of the losses he took were to really good teams.

NO. His father was a really good regular season coach. But something about him, his teams and his style of coaching made him a horrible big game coach. It is what it is.

Agreed it's very early to be convinced of anything but I am hopeful as I do see effort and a desire to change the culture.

I have to believe though that he has learned something from his father and that gives me hope for at least some good football to watch.

You could be right. I don't know. I just think he might have been snake bit. I don't know that he did anything wrong. He took a Browns team to two consecutive AFC championships and lost to Elway and the Broncos. One loss was "The Drive". The other was a fumble right before crossing the GL. If the dude doesn't fumble, the Browns are in the SB. I don't know how that's bad coaching. Same with the year the went to the AFC championship against the Bills in '93. They had zero chance of winning that game. The only question was, would they cover?

I think Marty had two problems, neither one is choking. He took teams that overachieved to the playoffs. Or teams that barely made the playoffs. Either way, you're probably not getting to the SB with either one. 2006 was disappointing. You have a big fumble in that game too.

The goal is to win the Super Bowl, not moral victories. Over two decades as a head coach, if you don’t make it to the big dance, you’re not good enough.

But he's better than any coach that was on the Cowboys not named Landry or Johnson. Also remember no coach that ever was to the big dance ever won with two teams. This is all happenstance. Just dumb luck.
