"It's pretty good," Kiper said. "I think there's a lot of defensive tackles who could go fairly high."

Kiper said there isn't a defensive tackle prospect on the level of Suh, whom the Lions drafted second overall out of Nebraska in 2010. But he said several players could land in the mid- to late first round, where the Lions should be picking come April.

"Danny Shelton from Washington (is) a nose tackle but could play in pretty much any scheme. But the 3-4 teams are going to look heavily at him," Kiper said. "But I think Eddie Goldman from Florida State -- now he's had some games where he hasn't dominated, but he's doubled, he had the injury last week when he came out of the game early. But when you look at Eddie Goldman, I watched him in high school, this is a kid with a lot of talent."

Shelton has 89 tackles and nine sacks for the Huskies, who finished the regular season 8-5. Goldman leads the undefeated Seminoles with four sacks.

Lions general manager Martin Mayhew already has made two in-person visits to scout Florida State, his alma mater, this year.

Along with Shelton and Goldman, Kiper said that Texas underclassman Malcolm Brown and Ohio State defensive tackles Michael Bennett and Adolphus Washington, a junior, also project as first- or second-round picks.

The Lions declined the fifth-year option on Fairley's rookie contract last spring and might be inclined to let him leave in free agency, considering his injury, weight and work-ethic issues. Mosley has been a valuable backup for most of his two years in Detroit, but he was suspended for a game and sent home from London earlier this year when he was caught smoking marijuana in his hotel room. And Fluellen was re-signed at midseason, after being released in training camp.

I'd hate it if we were in Detroit's situation. They've got the best DT in football and he's still just 27 but they basically cannot keep him off the market because he's from the pre-rookie cap era. His original rookie contract was so ridiculous that he can't be franchised without it being super painful.

He's not the best. That's your opinion. Just going by stats and play making Watt is the best in my book. McCoy and Dareus are also better than Suh.

Suh is very good but he isn't worth the money it would take.

Whatever. You've failed to grasp the point.

No I think you failed to grasp the point. The point is I do not want Suh. Sure he is a good player but he isn't going to fix this defense. We are not 1 player away and he is not worth the money he will demand.
