If Tampa-2, why flats uncovered?

If we are running a Tampa 2, can someone explain to me why Mo & Carr are not playing tight coverage on WRs for the first 5 yards (cutting off all quick slants), then passing them off to the safeties, and then guarding the flats against flares/wheels (Woodhead) and crossing (Gates) routes? It seems to me that Kiffen/Marinelli are either not running a true Tampa 2 here or our players are not playing it as they should. When I watch Chicago, I rarely see Tillman and Jennings leave the flats...

We play very little Tampa two (or Texas two as they call it here). Our scheme seems to be closer to a true cover three with some man mixed in at times.

The middle and the flats are vulnerable. What ur seeing is what many were afraid of.

We play the infamous Whiskey Tango Foxtrot defense. In which decade was Kiffen last relevant?

Kiffin's biggest issue at SC was not adjusting to the various offensive looks IN GAME. I think he was an innovator and one of the better defensive coaches in recent history, but I'm not sure he can keep up with today's offenses.

Even in it's heyday, the Tampa 2 was vulnerable to the 3rd or 4th deep route. Woodhead and Gates exposed the weakest link in deep coverage. Rivers is too good to not pick that up and Manning has probably already visualized a few dozen ways to exploit this defense as well. The Safeties have to be quick and be able to make good decisions even quicker. Church and Wilcox are both strong coming forward but struggle going backwards (aka deep coverage). Offensive Coordinators, Quarterbacks, and eventually our fanbase will come to realize this as the season goes on.

In the Tampa 2 isn't it the safeties responsibility to cover the wheel routes? Why is Bruce Carter running with a back 20 yards down field?

It has to be his responsibility in this defense, or he wouldn't have got benched.

So, we aren't running the Tampa 2? Enlighten me.

I really don't know what Kiffin calls this defense, but here's a quote from RHG on Carter:

“Bruce had some problems covering their guys,” Garrett said. “Two of their touchdowns were scored with (Danny) Woodhead on him, and he didn’t cover him that well, and there some other things going on in our other coverages that he didn’t do a good enough job on.”

Yeah, its clear that Woodhead was Carter's responsibility. But if its a Tampa 2 it should be the safety's. I don't know what is going on anymore.

this is the problem. NO identity on offense or defense. Do we run tampa 2? how about offense we hear all about the 2 TE offense. Heck even the 3 TE offense. Games come. We hardly run and get our 2nd TE involved.

Week 1: Kiffin's defense can create a lot of turnovers!
Week 2: Held them to 17 offense couldn't get points!
Week 3: Dominant Defense!
Week 4: Is Kiffin even alive?

I dont know what is so confusing...

When Kiffin got here he said we weren't going to run Cover 2 exclusively. Clearly, we weren't at SD.

This

The CB's are occupied with the WRs and are either shadowing them to pass off to the safeties on deep routes or shadow them towards the middle on quick or shallow slants which are passed off to the LB's and/or safeties. This opens up the flats for RB's to leak out.

If the WR goes inside the safety rotates down to the flat to limit the RB, unless he has a TE running a seam route or there is a deep crossing pattern, then he has to stay home to eliminate the deep play.

If the WR runs a deep route, the CB leaves the flat to pass him off to the Safety and now the OLB is responsible for the entire area from the hashmark to the sideline. That's alot of area to cover.

On the 2 TD's Carter gave up, I don't know what defense they were running, but the obviously blew his assignments
