if we don't make the playoffs its honestly time to move on from witten and ware. These two guys are suppose to be our best players and captains but they constantly let us down. Witten is great when wide open . But, lets face it he doesnt break tackles , he does not jump very high , he is slow and is not a threat in the red zone. I cant count how many times Romo has hit witten in stride and witten fails to reach the end zone and we end up losing . (the seattle playoff games doesnt fight for yards / the jets season opener 2011 ) just to name a few. We need to give Escobar and Hannah much more player time and even consider drafting a fast , speedy tight end next year . We need players that can create mismatches . Ware i love the guy but he is overhyped and overpayed. He has one good game then just dissapears (even against scrubs). Ware is also on the decline his back , neck , and shoulder are going to cause him to retire soon. If we cant win the division this year what has been the constant ? Witten , Ware , Romo . I hate to say it but they are soft .

Why would these moves hinge on not making the playoffs?

because these are the captains of the team . They are the core and have been and we have not won with them ! I just dont like how ware is so soft . He brings no intensity and leadership. Sure he is a great pass rusher but i just dont see him as someone who hates to lose. Witten is another guy who has had a great career but time and time again he fails to just gain the extra yard or two and its costs us several games throughout his career. We need new blood. Just have to go in a different direction if we fail. If we could get a 1st/ high 2nd for Ware i would take it.

But if we limp into the playoffs having barely won a sorry division, we should stand put?

It should start with getting rid of JG. What has JG done to make anyone believe he can get the job done??? His claim to fame is being Aikmans' 3rd string backup and having an Ivy league degree. Big woop. Having an Ivy league degree doesn't mean you are automatically qualified to be a NFL HC/OC.

He's the last link to the 90s dynasty Jerry has. He caught lightning in the bottle with Sparano in 2007 and everything since then has been Jerry convincing himself he just needs to get Garrett the right tools.

Witten will be here for sure. Hes romos best weapon and still a top 5 te in this league. Ware on the other hand is different. if he doesnt want to retire after this season will play. Of course if ware wants to play we want him back. Granted he hasn't played like we thought he would the last few years. Some players just dont like to keep playing when they cant play at a very high level like they used too. Also they have a life besides football that thwy wanna be healthy for a long time for. Thats why I wont be suprised if he retires.

I agree that Ware and Witten seem to be use to losing and it just doesn't overly bother them like it should. Witten is also getting older as the OP said.. he can't jump for the ball, he doesn't get many yards after the catch, and the ball has to be dead on the money or he just isn't going to catch it. It's time to look at the other TE's and develop them. Try to get mismatches based on athletic ability.

My other issue is Romo is insanely obsessed with Witten! He is ALWAYS looking for Witten. Yesterday the Chargers purposely took Witten out of the game and Romo still kept throwing to him. You wanna know how to take Romo out of a game? Take Witten out of it!
