I get the impression if we have no cap next year than teams can unload all the 'duds' who broke into the piggy banks of all the owners and than went to sleep fat dumb and happy knowing they are millionaires with no payback required...think guys like Jamarcus Russel, Haynesworth....maybe even our own RW and definitely Ken Hamlin
I would think that an uncapped year would be good for all of football for that reason alone...
...anyone know how this will all shape out if we do indeed have an uncapped year next year?

Haynesworth?

Granted, they aren't getting their moneys worth yet, but it would be pretty dumb to cut him capped or uncapped year.

I have seen a lot of people bring up the scenerio where the richest owners in the league could go out and get whoever they want because they could afford it in an uncapped year. Kind of a NY Yankee mentality. The thing is, I bet a lot of the guys that will be free agents going into that year will get a whole lot less than they are expecting. There will be no max on the amount that you can spend on a guy, but in contrast there will also be no minimum that you have to pay a guy. I bet there will be a lot of salary dumping going on and I think it will be easier to find bargain players.

I agree that it will be good for the whole league for teams to be able to dump cap figures of guys who are just dead weight. But we won't see guys who are faces of franchises like Haynesworth and Russel going anywhere.

Instead it's going to be guys like Hamlin who will be moving. Which I like.

The best thing about an uncapped season would be teams being able to keep their own players.

The current system makes it hard when you have second day draftees or college free agents who outplay their deals. It's hard to budget for something you just don't foresee happening.

No cap means we get to keep the players we want.

I'm not upset that Chris Canty left to get paid, I just don't think he'll ever be what he should be, but there's no question we wanted to keep him.

As for being able to get rid of bad contracts and under performing players, I'm sure we will see some of that.

But teams have been getting rid of lazy players with fat contracts for years now, preferring to take cap hits in one season instead of spreading hits over two years like in the early days of the salary cap era.

Fat Al is playing very well. Don't know where you get that. I hate ths Skins as much as anyone but Al is a baller. You must not have watched any of their games. Other than Ware and Rat no one on our D is in his class.

We can also rip up deals and sign new one's as well. The players would be willing because they get a new signing bonus. Teams would be willing because it brings down the base salary.

Flozell may be a candidate for something like that. Right now he is scheduled to make:
2010 $5 M Cap Hit $7.6 M Age 35
2011 $5.1 M Cap Hit $7.7 M Age 36
2012 $5.1 M Cap Hit $7.7 M Age 37
2013 $5.1 M Cap Hit $7.7 M Age 38

Remember, Flozell can be cut and get nothing. He has very little leverage. If cut, he can go to another team but I don't think he will see a big payday if he does. He has already banked the $13 M signing bonus. Also, 2010 may be uncapped but it's likely any new CBA will include some sort of salary cap. So using next year to improve our 2011 and beyond situation wouldn't be a bad idea.

So the Cowboys could rip up his contract, which would cause a $10.4 M cap hit (but there is no cap) and sign him to a 3-year deal with a $5 M signing bonus and a minimal base, let's say $1.25 M. Now his 2011 cap hit would be $2.92 M rather than $7.7 M.

I think Oakland will flush Russell. Even Al Davis in his vegetative state is beginning to smell the coffee here. Prolly Danny boy flushes a few of his mistakes too. As far as Jerry it will all depend on the next 10 games, but Hamlin needs to step it up, or the other Hamlin will be out there next year.

I don't know how it will all work out but it just doesn't seem like there will be free reign over contracts like that. I'm sure there are already things in place that prevent such a fire sale.

Lots of issues at hand. I'm sure Adam would have the clearest picture.

I just can't see teams getting a free pass on contracts like that. It assumes that players would be willing to play for less or not take less from another team.

Furthermore I'm pretty sure there are signing restrictions place on the top 8 teams in a no cap situation. Pretty sure they go lose 1, gain 1. Someone is signed by another team, you can then go and sign someone else.

I bet there will be restrictions on stuff like this, even with no cap. I just do see where the league or players union is going to let teams just dump anybody they want that is no performing up to their pay scale.

It just seems kinda cheap in my opinion, kinda like in Madden where you could wipe out cap penalties. I like the risk taking aspect of the game, if you sign a guy to a big deal and he doesnt pan out, then you have to live with the consequnces. Getting a free pass just seems cheap to me, that is why I never did it in Madden.
