First, Let's not for a second suggest that Pacman is the "WOW" player JJ was referring to. He wanted to add a wow player to the offense.
1. The Pacman thing isn't a done deal, nor is his reinstatement to even play this year.
2. I see the possibility of adding Pacman Jones as partly a calculated risk and partly a way of hedging our bets in case there's a run on CB's in the middle of round 1 and the top 4 or 5 are all gone before #22, which is absolutely possible.
3. I'm no fan of Pacman, and I'm not excited about having him blowup in Dallas; however, it's a much smarter deal, if it goes through, than what Oakland did with D. Hall....Pacman will NOT get a big contract from Dallas. He'll get an incentive laden deal that will pay him decent money if he makes the team, if he plays in most of the games, and if he stays out of trouble...then, the money he'll earn will be money well spent. However, unlike Oakland, it will be a deal that has almost no chance of our getting hosed if it doesn't work out and he screws up.
4. We'll still draft a CB on day 1, but we won't be forced to reach for one...if one of the 2,3, maybe 4 guys that we actually think carry a round 1 value is still there, we'll pull the trigger at 22 or 28, but we won't reach for the 5th or 6th guy, we'll wait and take a guy in round 1 or 3, which should still be an upgrade over Reeves or the FA's on the roster.
Pacman is an opportunity to get better and an opportunity to protect ourselves since realistically all of the attractive cb's could be gone before the draft even hits number 20.
5. Who knows how many CB's we actually value on our board...it could be just 2-3, and if they're gone, and if we have indeed made a deal for Pacman, and if indeed the Commissioner makes a favorable decision before the draft, then we can more easily look for the offensive "WOW" player in round 1, and it will probably be in the form of a WR or a trade, since keeping both #1's won't seem as necessary.
