And if not start at least get the lions share of carries.
People think Chris Johnson is better, and maybe he is, but Chris Johnson gets the opportunity.
First we need to ranch up our touches. We have 3 running backs... teams with 1 running back ran almost as much as all 3 of our backs combined.
Give Marion Barber 8 carries per game. 8 CARRIES. Give him the ball in the red zone, and give him the ball in the 4th quarter, and maybe on 3rd and short. Other than that, he shouldn't be rushing the ball.
We're using him wrong, dead wrong. Here are key splits for Marion Barber, that highlight his misuse.
2009
1st down attempts - 122
3rd down attempts - 21
1st - 3rd quarter carries - 161
4th quarter carries - 52
4th quarter +/- 7 pts - 19 carries
Marion Barber is a closer, and a short yardage back, use him like that, keep him fresh, and keep him powerful, especially when the defense is tired, and isn't tackling properly.
2006
1st down attempts - 63
3rd down attempts - 34
1st - 3rd quarter carries - 85 (9 in the first)
4th quarter carries - 50
4th quarter +/- 7 points - 24 carries
As he has grown older, his attempts should be more limited and MORE focused on his specialties, which also allows Choice and Felix Jones to focus on their specialties.
Last year we were 17th in rushing attempts, that needs to change. That isn't as balanced as Garrett would have us think. New Orleans ran 468 times, that's balanced. That's why they score so much. You can't just drop back against Drew Brees or blitz him all day, you have to contend with the run, which isn't nearly as good as ours. No team IMO has a better tandem at running back than us.
We should run it AT LEAST 460 times this year. Thats 28-29 times per game. 7 times per quarter. Which is just under 50% of the play call in an average game. That said time of possession goes up, and so does our success rate in converting downs.
And if barber gets 8 carries per game or 128 carries, that leaves 332 rushes... take out 32 for Romo. Leave us at 300. Meaning that between Choice and Jones they should get about 150 rushes each, or maybe 175 - 125. I might even go as far as to say Jones should get 200 rushes, and maybe Choice 100. That's still increased carries for Choice. And maybe we rush a little more than 460 if we're successful in moving the chains.
