If we're trying to get better, why keep the same guys?

No doubt. Agree!! But what spurred the trade was induced with our owner wanting to save Prescott.

If 2018 had been another non playoff season then it would have been a tough sell to extend his QB beyond his 4 year rookie contract which he was determined to prove benching Romo was right decision.

2018 season was saved spurring a losing record into a playoff run and arguably saving our young QB’s career in Dallas.

Now whether saving Daks career in Dallas was a pro or con is arguable. But for Jethro’s agenda I’d argue it was worth it to him. And that 2018 season arguably saved Daks career in Dallas.
No, I think it was about remaining relevant every season.

We were headed for a down year, there was zero doubt of that. The team that had been built up was losing pieces. You just let that year play out and take the draft picks, and we'd have been far better off than trading valued picks for a high priced WR.

Don't get me wrong, if we'd have had a super bowl contender, then the trade would've been fine. This is Jerry, once again, being the worst GM in the NFL at planning and looking ahead.

keep paying mediocre people is a foolish design
You have to make wise decisions on who you do or do not keep.

But it is simply an undeniable fact that you have to keep some people.

Some of the mediocre players we didn't pay last year were playing in the NFC title game.

Cowboys in recent years after being burned so badly in FA see it as more of an end of year closeout, bargain or clearance sale. Lol

Unless they think a move is needed to save the season like with Amari Cooper trade.
This is where the true frustration lies for me.

Not inclined to make moves to get a good roster over the top, only to keep the head above water.

They expect mid to late round rookies to come in and make an immediate impact. Shouldn’t even count on a first rounder to do that, but don’t tell them that given all the success. Just keep doing the same thing.

Dak winning three more playoff games in a row than he ever has is about “luck.”

Late round playoff games have a common theme…DLs just crushing it. Keep collecting corners Jerry.

Absolutely, but at that point he also wanted to not have to fire Garrett.

That was seven seasons ago. They got beat in the playoffs because they couldn’t stop the run and they still don’t get it.

I can virtually guarantee that next years DT room is going to be last years minus Golston with a 5th rounder added.

Not expect so much as forced. Their personnel mgmt is just so horrific that they continuously paint themselves into a corner where they're forced to start rooks right away.

Guyton is the latest, a very raw late first rounder that should've been a 3rd or 4th rounder. Sooooo, why did he have to play right away:

We drafted Tyler Smith to be OLT. What's wrong w/ that? Tyler is an OG, and would most likely not be all that great at OLT. Bad personnel evaluation. How did we not know that? So then, we had no one to play OLT w/ Tyron leaving.

Diggs was coming off an injury and we should've had a competent backup in place.

And look at the mess of a LB corps we marched into the season w/:

Overshown: Has not been able to stay healthy going back to his college days.
Damone Clark: Turns like a semi truck and will always be physically limited. Low end starter.
Kendricks: Nice player but a low end starter.

Soooo, this is what we were going into the season w/. Answer? Drafted Marist in the 3rd, a player many of the scouts didn't care for as a starter.

And that's not even talking about the RB fiasco!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Extremely horrific personnel mgmt. As usual.

Sounds about right!!!!

We used to discuss which DT we needed just about every draft. I quit, because we're not going to take one anyway, and if we do it'll be the same old limited player like Mazi. Feel like crying this AM? From Mazi's predraft scouting report: "Poor lateral mover who can't create angles." Know what that means? All the OL has to do is move to the side and he can't mirror. Sickening.

Right but that trade for Cooper was all about saving Dak.

The Dallas Cowboys - including current free agents - have as a team collectively won 2 wild card playoff games in the last 7 seasons. Yes they have made the playoffs 4 of those 7 years, but is this a mix of players we just can’t afford to lose? Sure some of them are worth keeping, but don’t we need some new blood, new leadership, a new drive to take it to the next level?
  • Serious Question: If we are trying to get better as a team, be more competitive in the playoffs, and transform this soft culture into a tough playoff tested team, why are we so committed as an organization to keeping the same guys?
  • It would be understandable if we had won more playoff games with these guys. We want to “run it back” with the same guys as if all we need is another chance?
I would like to see some cap space dedicated to some new players who have been on teams that have won lots of playoff games.

I’m not saying it has to be a complete roster turnover, but can we just not continue with the “we like our guys” mantra that has dealt us two wild card wins in 7 years? If we are going to get some valuable cap space, I would like to see some new blood brought in.

Otherwise are we not just doing the same things and expecting different results?
Bobhaze, you are saying what I want to hear but you didn't name names. Perhaps that was by design. I will say what you have not. Dak should have never been given a no trade clause so he can be gotten rid of at the appropriate time. The same goes for every player on this roster. A trade should always be an option. Dak and his oversized contract are now a liability rather than an asset.

Because, you can't turnover the entire team every season you don't win a SB. You have to maintain some of what you have.

I mean...duh.
Right. As I said in the OP, I’m not suggesting having a complete roster turnover.

I am saying how about bringing in some new, tough, playoff tested players who know what it takes to take it to the next level. We have won 2 wild card games the last decade. What’s wrong with some new blood?

We have tried that for 29 years, time to try a different approach Clampetts.
And what are the chances Jerry will do that. Jerry believes he’s a super smart football guy and he truly believes he fields championship caliber teams every season. It’s sad but it’s the way it is unless he changes radically and I don’t see that.
