If you are Detriot, It Might Be In Their Interest To Lose

I have seen this line of thinking on a couple of sites and the more you think about it, the more sense it makes.

The argument is that if you are Detroit, you don't want to have to play Rogers and the Pack in the playoffs. So if you lose tonight and the Skins beat the Giants next week, you can eliminate the Pack by winning next week at Ford Field.

You guys agree?

You can eliminate the Packers next week regardless as long as the Commanders beat the Giants. What does losing tonight have to do with it?

no, if they win tonight they lock up a playoff spot. They can still beat GB next week and knock them out of the playoffs if the skins win.

Punting an opportunity to lock up a playoff spot tonight makes no sense

Make no mistake. Detroit is coming in with a playoff spot in their sights. We need to make sure they either earn it, or they start looking at other possibilities. Play to win. The road to the playoffs goes through Dallas and we charge a toll.

So if you're Detroit you can clinch a wildcard spot tonight but instead you should tank because you're afraid of Green Bay? Who you'd then be forced to win against next week to get in if Washington wins I don't think you thought this through.

Teams never want to lose. If you think they ever do, then you have no clue. The coaches and players have 16 games a season. The more games they win, the more secure their jobs are and the more money they can make in the future. There is no such thing as losing on purpose in football at any level, at least not if you are dealing with true football players and coaches.

What's with this "I don't want to play _______ team in the playoffs?"

Fans worry about that. I doubt the players do. You play the team that's scheduled. And if you're good enough to get in the playoffs and want to go to the Super Bowl, you'll play and defeat the team on your schedule.

I do believe the Colts tanked to draft Luck. I can't prove it but starting a third stringer all but assured the Colts would have the worst record.

If they did, the order came from the higher up non football people. The coaches and players didn't take the field trying to lose. Someone may have forced a situation upon them that made it impossible to win but I know they wanted to and tried to win.

Oh, I agree. I think the GM or owner suggested starting (I can't even remember his name) the backup.
