... and not care so much about any other position on the team, which, if any OL would you keep?
Whatever happens, next year our QB must be protected and our RB's need the best blocking possible. Seattle and Pittsburgh, both flawed teams in different ways, were rock solid at OL. Our own defense was good enough and we have talent everywhere on offense except FB and #1WR.
IMO:
Retain at current contract as a Starter:
Adams
Retain at current contract as a backup:
Tucker: OT (he's a backup, period)
Pettiti: OT (developmental player)
Peterman: OG (make or break)
Johnson: C (he's a backup, period).
Columbo: OT (developmental player)
Release/Allow to leave as FA:
Gurode
Conditionally release/Allow to leave as FA:
Allen: pre-March release if refuses to take a paycut.
Rivera: June 2nd release if fails to continue to improve from back surgery through TC, rookies/new additions look promising, Larry Allen is still a Cowboy.
Moves:
Sign best OT in FA.
Sign best C in FA.
Sign good value at OG.
Draft best OL available in round 1 or 2.
Draft best OL in one of rounds 3-5.
Everyone competes, and let the chips fall.
I am optimistic we'll end up retaining both Allen and Rivera.
I wish we could have made a stronger pitch for Bill Muir before he signed his extension with Tampa Bay.
By tackling this issue from multiple angles: from within, other teams, and the draft, I think Dallas has a chance to go far next season. Without the OL, it's not happening.
