We sound like the current Commanders in reading that.

Cap strapped; big acquisitions that BUST; players concerned with more money; losing.

I hated losing WR James McKnight and CB Ryan McNeil in FA that year. Plus we lost Aikman, Dale Hellestrae, Chad Hennings, Leon Lett, and Erik Williams to retirement (except for Lett who went to Denver if I recall).

Our draft was horrible and I'll never forgive Jerry for passing on Shaun Rogers for Tony Dixon. Dixon was a complete waste and Rogers is a stud. I almost cried out of frustration when I saw who we selected and Rogers was still on the board. :bang2:

The one guy out of that draft that I had high hopes for was LB Markus Steele. He looked like he had all the tools and was going to be a player but then he just sort of fell off the face of the Earth.

That was 5 years after our 3rd Superbowl in 4 years ......

It had to come to an end sometime.

Wow. Just for the helluvit, who was the best draft pick that year? Who was the worst? Here are the choices:

Quincy Carter Tony Dixon Willie Blade Markus Steele Matt Lehr Daleroy Stewart Colston Weatherington John Nix Char-ron Dorsey

Best? Lehr, as laughable as that sounds but he's still playing.
Worst? That's a very tough one but I'll go with Dorsey.

The lowest expectations I had for a Cowboys team ever.(in 89, I didn't really know any better. I was 6 for Chrissakes) Campo actually did a nice job wringing 5 wins out of that team

A couple of characteristics of those guys you mentioned include

1. Several of the players were not committed to football. They were lazy. W. Blade comes to mind as does Dorsey.

2. There were some major reaches as well.

3. For several other picks (not on your list), there were character concerns.

If we don't draft for need (i.e., don't reach), and we make sure football is important to our potential picks (as BP used to say it has to be one of the 3 most important things in a man's life), we will already be better by leaps and bounds.
