The way I see it is I would play out this season for $16 million plus and get franchised next offseason for $20 million plus. That is $36 million + guarenteed for those saying to just sign him to a long term contract. Now after those two seasons have ended, Romo will be 34 going on 35. Why in the hell would Romo or his agent lead him to sign, lets say a 7 year $100 million dollar deal with $40 million guarenteed, when he could be guarenteed $36-$40 million in two seasons anyway? We all know that a contract is all about guarenteed money.
Could he still get a 5 year contract from Jerry with a ton of guarenteed money after this season and a franchised season in 2014? The answer is yes. Why you ask, because Jerry has made everything very comfortable for Romo by not drafting a QB or signing a QB who could start. Yes, they signed the likes of Brad Johnson, John Kitna, and Kyle Orton. All are considered backup QBs who have had minor success as starting QBs, none have really threatened Romos starting job or ever even pushed him in practice for that matter. Even the lone QB they drafted, Stephen McGee, he was drafted being labeled a two or three year project who one day could become "the backup to Romo", not even the challanger to him.
Everyone, Romo, his agent, the players, the coaches, the media, hopefully most of the fans know or should know that this team is throwing all of its eggs into one basket to win now. Now meaning a 3-4 year window. Most of our core players will be in there early, to mid, to late 30s by then and this team will be broken apart. Yes, there will be a rebulding happening in about 4 years.
Romo knows this, his agent knows it, and that is why a deal hasn't gotten done. Also with the way QBs are protected it is not much of a chance as lets say a guy like Spencer getting a long term deal done because of a possible injury factor and the guarenteed money. Romo has the ball in his court and can call all the shots from here because Jerry has never, and will never put any pressure on him with real competition.
Now watch and see, Romo will sign a new long term deal tomorrow and make me look like the fool I am, lol.
