With roster cuts and possible trades looming, let's imagine that you were in Jerry's position and you could keep, trade and waive the players you wanted to.

I figure that this might be a fun topic for the next day or so.

Outside of the obvious starters who didn't play last night, who do you think deserves to stay, and who goes?

Any trades you'd like to see happen?

And would you or would you not honor Patrick Crayton's request to be released?

A trade idea that I had:

DE Jason Hatcher and WR Sam Hurd to the Kansas City Cheifs for ILB Derrick Johnson, leading to either a position switch or outright release for one Jason Williams. Williams looks simply lost in his role as an inside linebacker and it's time to either shelve him for another season or quit this experiment. I know it's very soon, but I don't know if the team can afford the luxury of keeping a player who is still not ready to contribute.

I would use the roster spot for the departing Hatcher to keep Sean Lissemore. I've seen what Hatcher can do the past few seasons and have come away unimpressed. I think he'll be gone next season anyway and I would rather go with a younger player with better upside potential.

Hurd regrettably is simply caught in a numbers crunch but would get the opportunity to play and contribute with the Chiefs.

I think Johnson has excellent coverage skills and could help to solidify the team's nickel linebacker role. He's out of favor with coach Todd Haley but I think he's a talented playmaker.

Those are a few of my thoughts, anyone have any others?

You cannot trade Hatcher people! You have to have at least TWO backup DEs!

Who is going to take his place? Marcus Dixon? I think not!

Would KC really trade Derrick Johnson? At least from I remember he's a very good MLB.

If I'm GM I cut Hurd, Holley and keep Crayton.

I don't see much reason to trade Hatcher.

I think Lissemore can make it to the PS.

I thought I mentioned Sean Lissemore...

In fact I even bolded the name.

Marcus Dixon is better than Lissemore right now.

I'm not looking to boot Hatcher per se, but looking to improve the team at one position while managaing roster restrictions at others.

I don't know that the Chiefs would part with Johnson for Sam Hurd alone, but I think they need another DE. Hatcher fits the bill. He's in the final year of his contract and I foresee him going elsewhere next season anyway. Trade him for something while you can rather than watch him walk for nothing next year.

Lissemore may very likely make it to the practice squad, but why take the chance of losing him if you don't have to?

If he didn't, you lose a good prospect this seaosn and then lose Hatcher next year.

That's my thought process behind the move anyway.

Interesting.

What have you seen from him to make you think that?

Why does everyone hate Hatcher? He's probably going to start, or at least play a LOT, against Washington. This guy is seriously underrated.

Lissemore does look like a good prospect, but just get him to the practice squad and let him develop for next year when we have all these free agent DEs.

Lissemore is a nose guard not a defensive end. Hatcher is on the nickel package when we need pass rushers. With Spears coming back, he can go back to the role of nickel and dime rusher. Spears can be the first and second down run stuffer that he is very good at.

I doubt even though KC is hurting for a WR, that they trade a starting MLB, for a 5th string WR and pass rushing DE. Does KC run the 3-4 anyway?

We need role players, guys that can contribute in other ways than being on the starting D and O. Hatcher has a role on the D. We should not get rid of him.

Lissemore can go to the PS, I think we go with Junior and Josh as our back up to Rat.

Lissimore is extremely raw like Dixon was when he first arrived. Lissimore is at best a PS player this year.

If I were GM, I'd be patient with our roster. From my experience, there have been plenty of times when I wanted the Cowboys to cut somebody loose and instead find that to be a very bad idea as the player proves me wrong in the end. Trades don't happen much in the NFL unless they are a player for a draft pick type of trade. Those player-to-player trades are quite rare.

I don't think the D-Line is that much of an issue.

I'd probably keep 6 WR's (Austin, Roy, Dez, Crayton, Ogletree and Hurd) because the 4 backups have special team skills and Hurd is very good in coverage. I'd probably try to see what the market is for Crayton in a trade, if I can get a 3rd rounder, I'll take it. If not, I'll just keep him here. Same with Hurd. We don't have to cut any of those guys and if teams don't give me what I want, I'll just keep them on my roster and get plays out of them in 4 WR sets and Special Teams. Wait a bit in the season and if a key WR for another team gets injured, their value is worth more.

I have some concerns about the nickel/dime backer, but I'd wait and see what players other team's cut and see if we can get a solid nickel/dime backer off the waiver wire. I'd probably have patience with Jason Williams though, unless I think he's not motivated or the learning curve for him is too great to overcome.

3-4 DE's in our scheme are not that important. I think Wade wants guys that can stop the run on 1st and 2nd down, then have backups who can penetrate on passing downs along with being decent enough against the run so when the give the starters a breather they don't get gouged there.

But overall, it's not a position that is that crucial to our defense's success. Canty wanted big money and the G-Men were willing to pay him that, but there was no way we were going to pay a 3-4 DE that much money unless they were truly special.

Lissemore is a small college player who is undersized, but an intriguing prospect that was a 7th round pick. He was also injured for a big chunk of training camp. He's not exactly the type of player that team's look to take off the practice squad to put on their 53 man roster. And if they do, it's not a big loss for Dallas anyway because of the position he plays.

this post makes too much sense and should be moved to the "Common Sense Zone"

I wouldn't give up on Jason Williams right now. he maybe look lost, but when we drafted him last year we knew he was going to take some development time. you simply don't teach 6'4" 250 lb LBs running 4.4-4.5

but he got injured last year in camp and really this is the first year he is getting some play time. he has shown progress and needs another 1.5 years or so.

I give up on hatcher. he hasn't developed but giving hurd and hatecher for a cast off from KC!!! are you kidding.

Lessimore is not ready to contribute. he needs development if he ever does and he will clear waivers and be in PS.

now granted hatcher is also 4th on the depth chart so what do you expect from a 4th stringer? same is you are getting and that's why he is a 4th stringer.
