If Zimmer's moving on, available DC pool sure does seem to be shaping up well

Newly unemployed, but seemingly well-qualified DC candidates
  • Lou Anarumo (Bengals DC who this time last year was getting HC interviews)
  • Antonio Pierce (Raiders, technically skipped DC, going straight into HC from being LB coach)
  • Marvin Lewis (Pierce's ***'t Head Coach, and who otherwise needs no introduction and notably was only other interviewee when McC was hired)
  • Matt Eberflus (Bears, and has strongest Cowboys tie-in, having been LB coach here, followed by his DC job in Indy)
  • Jerod Mayo (Pats, ditto Pierce's experience)
  • Robert Saleh (Jets, and also needs no introduction given his Niners' DC stint)
  • Ron Rivera (Out of football since being let go in WAS, but has almost always been highly regarded defensive coach for 20-ish years)
  • Dennis Allen (Saints, and has similar regard and history to Rivera)

Could see Eberflus coming back into the fold.
Came here with Rob Ryan and his 3-4 scheme as the LB coach.
Year 1 Ware got 19.5 sacks, Lee blew up this year
Year 2 Ware and Spencer got double digit sacks
Year 3 he stayed after Ryan was canned and still coached LBs in the 4-3.
Was the LB coach with McClain, moving Lee to weakside, Hitchens and Smith in 2017.

Was the DC for the colts with Darius L. peak LB play and taking them from 30th overal to 10th in defensive rankings.

I'm not too opposed to it. Curious if he were to come back what type of defensive formations/gap assignments he would do.

With Parsons would he have Parsons as the LEO/wide 9 all the time, similar to a 3-4 LB where Parsons could be standing up or a 3 point stance?
I don't recall what defense he ran with the Colts as the DC.

Same, he's a sold DC and had success up till the Bears. I'd also be curious how he'd tailor the defense to Parsons.

I agree. Just one of those guys that may just top out as a Coordinator only, which is still an impressive feat. Give him just one unit to focus on and it seems like he can succeed there.
I don't recall any bad blood here either. Don't think they blocked him like Callahan for outsider positions

Wow your entire list other than Anarumo consists of freshly minted or past HC disasters . I want a new list by 9 AM tomorrow., And if Zimmer is going can he take McCarthy .

Zimmer is not moving on, he's just getting started.

he'd do whatever Jerry told him to do! If we get a new coach, let that new coach bring in his guys or the guys he wants, this would be a Jerry hire no doubt

I'd promote Harris before hiring any of those guys, especially the ones who have been sitting out.
no to Harris, didn't have the same spark as he did in the last few years, he'd probably leave to go to Wash or something else

His best corner was coming off a major injury and the other missed half the season. He knows the game, give him a proper shot if we're just kicking around retreads.
That's true, and he was also given CB's that he had to deal with that weren't good, or some that were drafted that didn't develop into anything

Saleh or Allen. Eberflus had a beef with Jerry when he was here. Wasn't on good terms with him. So I don't see him as a viable option.

There's a long, long, list of great coordinators who sucked as HCs. If they were great coordinators prior to flaming out as a HC, I have no problem giving them another shot as a DC
