If Zimmer's moving on, available DC pool sure does seem to be shaping up well

Please. No more talk about retreads. Ban the term.

It's silly.

If a guy still has the fire, you don't penalize him because he actually has experience and moreover has some success on his resume'.

Let the Carolinas of the league hire the newbies and serve as a testing ground for up-and-comers. In Big D, we need proven, not potential.

Wade Philips McCarthy didn’t distinguish themselves . Retreads .

McVay Shanahan Kevin O Minnesota even Taylor in Cincy has turned around a franchise stuck in neutral .

Jerry find an OC for HC that can score TD’s not Aubrey 60 yarders .

Came here with Rob Ryan and his 3-4 scheme as the LB coach.
Year 1 Ware got 19.5 sacks, Lee blew up this year
Year 2 Ware and Spencer got double digit sacks
Year 3 he stayed after Ryan was canned and still coached LBs in the 4-3.
Was the LB coach with McClain, moving Lee to weakside, Hitchens and Smith in 2017.

Was the DC for the colts with Darius L. peak LB play and taking them from 30th overal to 10th in defensive rankings.

I'm not too opposed to it. Curious if he were to come back what type of defensive formations/gap assignments he would do.

With Parsons would he have Parsons as the LEO/wide 9 all the time, similar to a 3-4 LB where Parsons could be standing up or a 3 point stance?
I don't recall what defense he ran with the Colts as the DC.
43 with light DTs, that first couple of seasons when he made the jump from 30th to 10ish they were starting 2 285lb tackles including the 1tech!

  • Matt Eberflus
  • Robert Saleh
  • Dennis Allen
I wouldn't be mad to see these guys under consideration. They've had some real good success as DCs. Sometimes head coaching opportunities just don't work out. Doesn't mean these guys can't coach some defense.

I suspect all 3 of these would continue to use Parsons as a full time DE in a 4-3 which will shorten his career.

Much rather have someone like Rex Ryan

I don't know if he would come on as DC, but I wouldn't hate it. He had some pretty damn good defenses in NY.

Newly unemployed, but seemingly well-qualified DC candidates
  • Lou Anarumo (Bengals DC who this time last year was getting HC interviews)
  • Antonio Pierce (Raiders, technically skipped DC, going straight into HC from being LB coach)
  • Marvin Lewis (Pierce's ***'t Head Coach, and who otherwise needs no introduction and notably was only other interviewee when McC was hired)
  • Matt Eberflus (Bears, and has strongest Cowboys tie-in, having been LB coach here, followed by his DC job in Indy)
  • Jerod Mayo (Pats, ditto Pierce's experience)
  • Robert Saleh (Jets, and also needs no introduction given his Niners' DC stint)
  • Ron Rivera (Out of football since being let go in WAS, but has almost always been highly regarded defensive coach for 20-ish years)
  • Dennis Allen (Saints, and has similar regard and history to Rivera)
Only people from this list I would like to have is Saleh and Allen.

I believe Paul Guenther is on the current Cowboys staff. Didn't he work under Zim in Cincy and with the Vikings? Zim might recommend him to JJ to be his successor.

If it were up to me, I'd choose Saleh. His 49ers defenses were very tough and hard-nosed. His Jets defense was ranked 10th in the league this year prior to his firing...

Notice, no one ever argues with the logic presented. It is perfectly logical, perfectly pragmatic. In the real world, it's how business ordinarily works. You pay your dues. You prove yourself over a number of years in a number of situations.

Notice, the counterargument is to point to anecdotal evidence that it is possible to hire a hot name youngster and see some success.

Notice, the counterargument is that... only that... and conveniently enough, it doesn't even have the integrity to acknowledge the Jerod Mayos and Antonio Pierces and the list of those just like them who were considered hot name youngsters worthy of mach-1 acceleration up the ladder that left the hiring committee disappointed.

Retire the retreads term... it's just stupid.

Yep, lots of retreads doing quite well and are prepping for playoff games right now. I'd love to have a retread like Reid, Harbaugh, or Payton right now lol

Saleh and Allen are the two guys I would want. Eberflus can coach, but he needs to go cool his heels in college or something. He was way toxic in Chicago this season.

Saleh back to SF is all but confirmed if he doesn’t land a HC job

Mayo & Pierce are from the defensive side of the equation. Pay attention now I said OFFENSIVE side of the ball . Find an OC and they can even have been former HC doesn’t matter .

You have almost 100 million per yr tied up in your QB & # 1 receiver plus hard decisions are coming due about the running game . You’re solely dependent on your FG kicker for points . Guys like Campbell and Minnesota Kevin throw FG’s in the garbage they want Touchdowns.

MM has had five yrs to turn this into a scoring machine . 2 of his 5 yrs here totaled 13-20 record . The other three saw zero playoff success . Time to get off the retread merry go round ,

Rivera nothing in Wash . Eberflus aside from not knowing time outs were legal didn’t bring a thing to the table to help Caleb Williams .Todd Bowles no real success in playoffs TB . Saleh defensive coach Jets nothing . Mayo & Pierce defensive coaches . Zimm no playoff scalps in Miiny . Rex Ryan please no been out of the coaches room a decade .

Jerry get someone in here who can get the ball into the end zone with this collection . Then get out of the way let them hire a staff

Agreed!! And some guys are made to be DCs, but are horrible or average HCs. The job descriptions are very different. Wade is the first one that comes to mind.
