Igor vs Spears?

In all honesty, I might be missing something when it comes to Igor. I really hate him as a player so that may effect my judgement of his performance this last season. However, based on what I saw, I thought he would be one of the first guys to go. I would much rather have bowen ratliff and spears as our starting ends.

Can someone enlighten me on the reasoning for keeping igor over spears. I know spears will probably cost more but I cant see it being unreasonably high compared to igor. I think spears just wants a fair extension and imo he is worth it. I would rather resign spears then taking a de with the 9th pick.

Thoughts?

It's all about who is under contract for now, especially with the uncertainty of the labor agreement. They're in no rush to make salary-saving moves yet. Once Rob Ryan sees all the film on Igor from this past season though, he'll know how bad he was. I just remember a play in which Igor was pancaked, manhandled and almost put into the fetal position

The only reason is because Olshansky is under contract (and pretty reasonable I recall someone posting a while back) where as Spears is a free agent and might be considerably more expensive.

Still, if it were me I'd cut Olshansky, let Hatcher walk and resign Spears & Bowen.

The reason Igor is still here is simply he is signed at a cheap rate, knows the system, and is not flat out terrible. Spears is a 2 down player and will command a high salary, probably a little less than Canty received from the Giants. The team needs to keep some kind of chemistry and with a possibility of two new safeties/position changes, a new linebacker, and a new DE it will be hard to keep that fluidity. If we add a 2nd DE in the mix than they only starter returning on the DL is Ratliff.

100% agree with this. We are going to miss Spears, I wish Jerry and co. had learned that after last year's defensive collapse.

#s on Igor's snaps this year vs last? I expect he may have been overused a bit after Spears went down. We all need to realize that the entire D played worse last year. Yes, Igor celebrated stupidly after making meaningless plays. Yes, he tends to not give 100% when things are going poorly. But I really think he can be a good addition to Ryan's D. Igor's main issues tend to be motivation - a fiery D-coord and an equally fiery D-line coach may do wonders

When I watched him in games last year I agree he should be cut if it saves some money. However, his play versus the run the year before and the overall season is better than anything Spears has ever had in his career.

So there are kinda 2 sides to the Igor story.

DE is probably our weakest unit outside of Safety so if Peterson is gone I fully expect us to go DL.

Yeah but DL talent is deep this year. We should trade down if Peterson is gone and there is no OL or DB of value left at 9.

I've said it before...Spears is not a special player, and he never really earned his first round contract. I haven't seen him produce any better than Igor at any time in his career. He doesn't create pressure, and he doesn't get in the backfield for tackles for loss.

If he was a 4th round pick or FA pickup, we'd be able to resign him pretty cheaply because only the 3-4 teams with even worse DL than us would make a run at him. However, as a first round selection with a fairly nice contract, he's not looking to sign for less than what he's used to.

He isn't worth that money. All the so-called Spears fans: I don't believe a single one of you would be satisfied to see us draft a guy just like him in the middle of round 1 this year. He is NOT productive. If no other team throws good money beyond his productivity at him, then I could see us resigning him as insurance and to compete at DE, but no way should we give him the money he thinks he deserves and hand him the starting position.

I don't think he'd be any better at 4-3 tackle...he just cannot beat anyone 1-1.

Thats because our DE's have always been asked to contain.

Plus Spears is a 2 down player so his chances are extremely limited.

So yeah you're right. He isn't a special player.

Against the run he is great but I wouldn't sign him for anymore than 3.5 mill per.
