I'm not convinced that George Iloka is a substantial upgrade over Jeff Heath. In fact, I'm not even convinced that Iloka will beat Heath out for the starting position. Heath is still one of the fastest players on the team. And, the Cowboys only gave Iloka a veteran minimum veteran contract.

So, in my opinion, if the Cowboys want a marked upgrade at safety, it is going to have to come from the draft.

Speed means nothing if you take bad angles, cant tackle, and have no instincts or hands. Which is Heath in a nutshell.

Without question, lloka is a better SS. Strong tackler. There is no doubt he is better than Heath. But I cant say he is lots better. Cowboys will take a safety with their 2nd round pick and he will probably start.

Heath will be relegated to the bench and special teams where he belongs and can be appreciated.

We don't know what Iloka is because he didn't really play last year. He could start as easily as he could get cut.

Regardless, he doesn't move the needle for this defense.

Iloka...but something tells me our 2nd Rd pick will have something to say...Rapp,Abram or Thornhill...maybe Thornhill or CGJ in the 3rd.
but I think our up-grade comes in Rd 2 or 3.

He’s better against the run than heath
I think they will both play in different situation
I also think 58 is very likely going to be a safety
I think the DL guys will be picked over by then and my guess is Thornhill becomes a cowboy
Then again I’ve picked right very few times in my life outside of first rnd
The last time was Fred
Zeke was too obvious to count

I have no idea because Iloka hasn't played with the Star on his helmet, or in our system or with Richard coaching him up. I'll wait and see.

Believe we will draft one for sure. 30 draft day visits and 6 were safeties. Also number 1 position brought in during FA. All points lead to drafting one. Where is the question

One, Iloka isn’t likely to be a “substantial” upgrade on Heath. But he’s likely an upgrade solely because he’s a better tackler.

I am not sure why people keep bringing up Heath’s speed as if that matters. Speed is useless if you aren’t a good player.

I'd like to think S is in the discussion at 58. Deep draft at DT so we should be able to get "a player" in the third round. Not ruling out DE either. Yeah, I got Zeke and LVE right. Totally wiffed on Taco. I went TE in the first round of that strong class, but nooooooo!

If we play a traditional F/S - S/S system with the SS playing near the box, covering mostly TEs then he is a major upgrade. If we are talking a conventional cover 2, two-safety system in which the safeties are interchangeable, then it's close you could make a good argument for Heath
.
Something to keep in mind, if we use a 4 -2 front the vast majority of the time going forward, which I think we will, then having a SS that is a force against the run is pretty important. I think he would have made a difference in the Rams game, I really do.

That being said, I think S and DT are the two positions where a draft pick can come in a make an immediate big impact.

I'm not sure why we are putting so much stock into a 40 yard dash that both players completed over 5 years ago, and that's really the sole basis used in the OP.
