I'm glad we have the 9th pick instead of the 5th

It's way cheaper. This gives us more cap flexibility to sign free agents, and it actually IMPROVES our ability to trade down (people don't want to spend that much money on a top 5 pick and are generally hesitant to trade up).

It does not quite work that way. Teams are given a set amount of money based on the draft choices they have to sign picks. It does not effect FA one bit.

Wouldnt picking highter mean paying more?.....which in turn give you less money for FA and such because you spent more money towards the cap?

I understand that teams are allocated money on where and how many draft picks you have....but that money still counts against the cap.....or am I mistaken?

J.Russell of the Raiders got a huge signing bonus....and salary based on this draft slot.....and I think the Raiders did take a big cap hit with that mistake.

So I assume the OP here was stating is because we pick lower.....we in turn will save more cap space by not overpaying for the 6th pick.....It may be a small savings ....but it could be a difference in us picking up a FA.

I'm by no means a cap expert or even a cap novice but I dont believe from prior posts by Adam it counts against the cap and even so, the difference between the 6th and 9th is so small it would not have that much of an impact.

I understand....it may not be a big difference.....and we all know the NFL needs a rookie salary cap because its insane that a college player picked in the draft can make more money then a proven NFL player

Im just wondering then....because of reading other stuff....making a mistake on a players picked especially in the top 10 can set a team back....because the time spent trying to develope that player and the cap hit it cost the team.

I beg to differ. With the 5th pick, we would have at least been in the "Nick Fairley Sweepstakes". At #9, we don't have a shot. In fact, both top corners could be gone, as well.

I guess the only positive is that picking an offensive lineman at that spot wouldn't seem like such a reach. (Even though JJ has NEVER taken an OL in the 1st rd. in his life!) If the past several drafts are any indication, we're due for a good one.
