... I know a little sumpin bout expectations, long-term strategy planning, and building teams, for what it’s worth. So without further ado … here’s my draft day story and resulting analysis. The opinions to follow plus about $1.50 will buy you a pretty good bowl of soup at most traditional home-style diners.

The Background and Expectation

Thought I’d throw another $.02 into the ring, since the analysis is rampant. I want to echo the sentiment of several other posters that we should all take the draft-day grades with a grain of salt. While I would have loved to see B+/A- ‘s across the board, please keep in mind that most of the national sports writers are looking at the picks themselves based on their own individual assessment of talent, and do not overlay that assessment on top of a team’s short-term or long-term strategy to arrive at sound conclusions.

Let me preface my analysis with the fact that this seemed like a very shallow talent pool. Now, who thinks it’s smart to make a big splash in a shallow pool?

Let me also note that I was originally very disappointed in what our boys did in the draft as far as the actual picks go. Let me explain why. See, going into this year’s draft, I bought all of that BPA talk hook, line, & sinker. So, I really was expecting Jerry & Co. to sit back and let the draft come to us. I figured that if the brain trust really felt that we could line up and play today effectively, this BPA thing could really work.

So, I expected to have the Cowboys tagged with the steal of every round. I expected each round to bring an amazed Kiper staring into the camera saying, “Wow, great pick by the Cowboys – I had this kid going two rounds earlier. What a steal!”

I sat down with my wings, laptop, headphones, and TV Remote, isolated in my cave from the rest of the family.

In a de ja vu moment, with shades of Steven Jackson dropping in our laps, lo and behold, here comes Brady Quinn … first steal of the draft – Round 1!

The Draft Unfolds

I loved the deal with Cleveland. While I admit a sickening feeling on passing on Quinn (seemed like a replay of Landry & Co. passing on Montana), I was thrilled to see us secure Cleveland’s first-round pick.

When we traded back up, again, I had mixed emotions. Initially, I was upset because I thought that Spencer may have dropped to us. That feeling dissipated as soon as New England traded the very next pick away … they were targeting Spencer as well. That’s all I needed to validate the Spencer pick.

So, now we wait until Rd 3 … agonizing. Our pick … Marten from BC. OK – lineman from BC – good. Wait a minute – Marten? This pick really disappointed me. With Jason Hill still on the board, couldn’t we have waited for this guy to be there on day 2?

Actually, maybe not. It turns out that Denver and Oakland both picked OTs before our next pick.

Day 2 … Rd 4. I am hoping against hope that Michael Bush falls just a tad. Nope. Oakland selects him with the first pick on Day 2. It’s going to be a rough day. Oh well, maybe if we pick Bush now, it would preclude us from chasing McFadden … everything happens for a reason.

Isaiah who? This pick really threw me for a loop. Yes, I had succumbed to the mock draft expectations of us getting a WR, and with us passing up on Jason Hill, having had so much previous success with the name Hill on the back of a Cowboys Jersey, this one raised an eyebrow. At the time, I didn’t realize that we were looking primarily for a KR. In Jeff we trust.

Later in the round … Doug Free. This is the first time in the entire draft that I was thinking that we landed value. This guy was projected much higher, and we got him in Rd 4. OK, great … but now we’re in an area where all that’s left at the salad bar are a few garbonzo beans, radish slices, and some brown lettuce leaves.

Round 5 … nap time.

Round 6. A kicker … KICKER? A FB with baggage. Should have extended the nap.

Round 7 … finally, a few CBs. One seems intriguing – the other one looks like a bean pole. Draft over.

Is that it?

I went into this thing thinking we would be universally praised for taking the steal of each round and only one pick seems to have qualified … Doug Free.

Wow. Not a great draft.

After the Hangover

Still bummed about the actual picks (except Spencer), I look to consolation from the Ticket and the Zone.

Then the big picture starts to hit me. The 2007 draft pool was shallow. Why? Not a lot of sexy flashy (read QB, RB, WR, CB, Sack Artist) picks available. So, what do we do? Let me draw you an analogy. If you’re going to a dive bar for dinner, you don’t order the Lobster Ravioli with the pink vodka sauce … you order wings or a burger. That’s what we did – no fancy-pants picks … we went meat-&-potatoes.

Now, let’s say that Jerry, Steven, Wade, Jason et al have put together a 2-year plan to win the big one. Anyone opposed to that? Everyone patient enough to adhere to a 2-yr plan?

Year 1 (Weak Draft) – Lay a foundation, start the framing, and get a bit of dry-walling done.

Year 2 (Stronger Draft) – Go after the premium hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, and granite countertops.

Maybe not so crazy after all.

State of the Union

So, finally, I started to look at how we stand headed into the season.

Offense

We head into the season with the same basic offense that scored 425 points last season. Them’s pretty good numbers. Our problem was not our offense. Did we really need that extra WR?

On the line, we upgraded our RG position (or worst-case we have a push), and brought in some promising prospects to correct the Rogers/Peterman debacle. Hopefully, we have strengthened our line both in the starter department and hopefully in the reserves.

Our running game overall was extremely effective. Should be a push here, with the potential of upgrading at FB … if we get lucky.

Romo should improve. With the line improving due to the “gel” factor, and his rapport with the WRs, we should see more consistency. The wild card is Garret. I actually think that because he is young, and played the position well, Tony will thrive.

Our WR corps will remain deadly. With the offensive scheme simplified, even the boneheads should be able to improve. Our young guys will know what to expect, and maybe we can have another set of hands which can also return kicks.

Defense

The primary problem last year was exposed as soon as Greg Ellis went down. Our lack of pressure killed us. While Bobby seemed to be coming into his own late last year, I have a feeling that this Spencer kid is going to wreak havoc right off the bat. If that is the case, then we have fixed our problem.

I am excited about the prospect of Wade improving the play of Spears, Canty, Burnett, and Hatcher, whose pass rushing skills will inevitably be upgraded due to scheme and tutelage.

I am still worried about FS. However, with a more intense pass rush, we should be able to rest a bit easier with our current personnel. I’m glad that JJ feels that Hamlin can QB the defense, but I hope Wade gives Watkins a chance to flash his skills. I always felt that with all the spouting off about how BP thought you could not rush a QB into the fray because of psyche concerns, he was a complete hypocrite when it came to Watkins. Had this kid been encouraged a bit more, and put back in the saddle, I think we’d be looking at the ball-hawking FS that we have all dreamed about since Darren left the scene so many moons ago.

Special Teams

Maybe we upgraded the Kicker and Returner positions. Even if we go into the year status quo, we should still be OK.

You can sleep easy...

IF Brady Quinn starts, he will lead us to a top 5 pick.

He is no Joe Montana, the only similarity is they both went to ND.

He was way overhyped and the rest of the league realized this.

The Bottom Line

Guys, Jerruh prefaced this draft by saying that we were pretty well set at almost every position. He didn’t say it was a weak draft class, but you could see it as soon as Round 3 hit. So, we went meat-&-potatoes, and hopefully have acquired some anchors for the trenches.

If we do have a 2-yr plan in place, it looks pretty strong right about now. Next year, we can really add some sizzle by drafting in the skill positions to either replace aging veterans, or as an insurance policy in case Romo or Julius don’t quite pan out. Our defense is young, and should be pretty well set for a while. Worst case, we can get younger/better at NT/FS through FA and the draft next year.

I honestly think that our front office has positioned this team extremely well for a Super Bowl run this year, and a championship next year.

This is all coming from a guy who usually thinks the glass is cracked, and leaking fluid rapidly.

I gamble and even go long odds which is pretty much of the second day. One team did take their bundle of second day 5s, 6s and 7s and trade up for a potentially better 4th. Would it have been so bad for us to do so? I think there were a few 4th we might have gambled on that were a little better than some of our later picks. I might be wrong but the proof will come when Wade picks his squad of actives and practise squad folks. It wasn't a loaded draft but what you do when it isn't is as important as what you do when it is. Geting the best value out of what you have is goal #1.

Because some fans have launched a full frontal assault on everything the franchise does and it has to be balanced out.

Maybe it is only people like you that have to do that - - - - because they really don't understand football values. ;)

Because there seems to be a urinary tract infection epidemic on this board.

Don't listen to them eduncan. they are all jealous of you.

Yes, at first glance there did seem a need to defend our picks.
Then getting a D ferchristsakes from Goose and the Doubting Debbies from elsewhere.

I have to say that, at first, I was bummed out the first day. I just shook my head and said "DE. That is sooo typical of Jerra" when we needed help at secndary and WR.

But the reality is that with a hybrid DE/linebacker such as Spencer, he can step in sooner than we think and help the secondary with his play on the line.

The next need was WR but . . . we kinda addressed that with that hybrid QB/WR whatshisname. And Austin miles could help.

Who knows, with two No. 1s next year, we might get us a pair of can't miss WRs when Glenn and T.O. start getting their social security checks.

So there is NO NEED to defend any of our draft picks.

Be cool and stay classy.

Mainly because so many fans are just casual fans and likely take their lead from what the talking heads have to say about everything.

The Cowboys did well enough in the draft that it should have been sufficient to have silenced most critics. The fact that they have "warehoused" a first round selection for NEXT years draft seems to have been left out of many analysts critiques.

The first selection of next years draft must be added to this years rookie class and if you try to give a fair analysis for any team while withholding the first round selection- the results are always skewed.

Anthony Spencer at 26 was to be expected. The deterioration of our pass rush after Ellis went down just killed us. Spencer and Carpenter compete with Ellis on the outside opposite of Ware and our deeply manned outside LB's will terrorize offensive lines all season long. If an injury occurs, we have solid players to fill the void.

The selections of James Marten and Doug Free were almost a requirement and if any weakness existed other than the one percieved at FS, it was depth along the O-Line. The Offensive line is where it all starts whether you run or pass and hopefully these two will finally solidify the line for years to come. Flozell Adam's replacement is already on board, which youngster will it be? McQuistan, Marten or Free? I had Free listed as the better of the two rookies and we ended up with both! These guys can compete now.

Isaiah Stanback - Possibly the best pure athlete available on draft day. Can throw the ball 70 yards in the air, run a 4.3 40 and lift 225lbs 22 times. He entered college as a WR but also has a natural ability when running the ball. Having a player who was a successful three sport star in college (Football, Baseball and Track) and who has all the tools to be effective in so many ways, it just adds flexibility and provides opportunity. Does that count as an intangible? The Cowboys stole one here.

Nick Folk made sense to me, the cost of a quality kicker is sky rocketing these days and this kid could be around for the next 15 seasons. I think we got the best kicker on the board when you consider the total package... Mecbane is good, but he reminded me of Vandy just a little too much in some areas and Crosby is simply over rated- media hyped. This kid is a down to earth player who will continue to improve and can contribute in every phase of the kicking game. Kickoffs, FGs and even as punter if needs be.

Courtney Brown was one that I had the Cowboys taking, although I admit that I had the Cowboys taking Tarell Brown along with him. He will do to push for a roster spot right away. The Alan Ball kid seems a bit smallish but he comes from a major college and started every game for them as their best cover corner. He went one on one against such opponents as Tedd Ginn and Ginn finished with just 5 catches for 26 yards and no TDs on that day. I'll withhold judgment on the skinny kid and see how he does- intriguing enough for a late seventh rounder I should think.

Deon Anderson I knew nothing about until he was selected, but researching him makes me feel better about him already. When we need a two yard gain can you imagine a right side that includes Gurode, Davis, Colombo and Doug Free (played TE and will line up there again) getting the push and this kid pounding the way into the end zone or across the marker as the ball carrier or just a bad mood kind of lead blocker? He catches the ball well enough also.

Couple these new players with what we had last season player wise, and the fact that Phillips WILL make the most of what he has before him- and I would say that defensively, Wade's plate is full.

Offensively, Garrett must be on overload already just thinking of the possibilities. Any offensive coordinator worth his salt would be thrilled to have the offense that the Cowboys could field even before the draft.

This draft was not nearly as satisfying as some in the past, but it was much better than some as well and I don't see any wasted picks at this point. Am I thrilled to death, no. But I am comfortable that we improved the team and just as importantly- we vastly improved our position for next years draft. It will be here before you know it. :)
