I watched a huge, beautiful, male silver back gorilla (Oscar) for over an hour at the Columbus Zoo several years ago. Kids were taunting him a little through the bars. (not glass like this one) He sat and watched them with no response. After maybe 5 minutes they grew bored and began to walk away. Oscar watched them as they walked towards the far end of the huge cage/area he was in. I kid you not, he then hustled down to the end of the cage and tipped a huge water tub in their direction, splashing on them.
It was over 100 degrees that day, and I got over right beside a zoo worker as she sprayed cold water from a hose on Oscar. He was about 3 ft from me on the other side of the bars. He loved the hose, and pounded his chest while yelling something over and over. He was enormous, and his teeth were beautiful as he opened his mouth to yell. It was awesome to be that close, .. and frightening too.
I watched him as he discovered back through a tunnel from the big cage, in the area where they probably slept, someone had put watermelon out for the gorillas. He ate his fill by himself and then went back through the tunnel into the big cage where many other gorillas were, and spread the word that there was watermelon. I know it is hard to believe but I watched him do it. And they all went over and had watermelon.
He was on display and I think he knew it. One female with a young gorilla kept coming over to him seeking his attention, but he would stiff arm her like a RB would, and run away, as if to say, .. "not now woman, my admirerers are here."
I could have watched him all day.
