I had mad respect for Norv when he was our offensive coordinator back in the early 90s and had really wished him well when he was finally given his first head coaching position. When things didn't go so well in Washington as well as Oakland, I was convinced that his problems had more to do with talent and ownership than anything else and believed that he would finally get the success he deserved when he took over an extremely talented San Diego team. But the sad truth is that he's simply not cut out to be a head coach (even though the season's still early in his stint with the Chargers). His problem has nothing to do with the Xs and Os - fundamentally speaking, but rather his ability (or inability if you prefer) to properly motivate his players and get them to play to the best of their ability. With the lethargic style of play the Chargers are demonstrating lately, they no longer look like the best team in the NFL - as many had predicted for the start of this season. In fact, I'd put them somewhere in the middle of the pack as it stands right now.
And, unfortunately, blame for a problem such as this will fall squarely on the shoulders of the head coach every time, as it should. Norv may still be able to turn this team around but the odds are against him when you look at his previous record as head coach of other NFL teams. Still, I hope that he can pull it off and eventually win a Superbowl as a head coach. As a Cowboys fan I feel that I owe him that much...
