He took a 5-11 team and made them 10-6 but, when he was allowed bring in "his guys" the team regressed steadily. (Wow, I guess we know why Robert Kraft didn't allow him to shop for groceries in New England)
Herein lies the problem, instead of trying to bring in every guy who used to play for him that was still active in the league he should have been focusing on improving the team, period. A truly great coach can beat you with his toys and then turn around and beat you with yours. However, Parcells hasn't showed the flexibility, imagination and motivation capable of winning with his 'new guys' and his 'old guys'.
Almost everything Bill has done has been reactive and visionless. As soon as the Texans fired Dom Capers, Parcells should have had Capers on a plane to Valley Ranch and Mike Zimmer on a plane to Gilligan's Island.(see Joe Gibbs recruiting of Gregg Williams) Quincy Carter was running for his life in '03 and now Bledsoe is running for his in '06. Parcells had four years to fix this offensive line and it's as bad as it was when he first got here. Both of these decisions show a lack of imagination, prognostication and planning for the future: and those aren't the only ones. What of lowballing Jake Delhomme only to watch him sign with Carolina and turn them into an NFC power? Letting Hudson Hauck walk? Giving Mike Zimmer a raise to not coach the Nebraska Cornhuskers?
Parcells was a great coach but as we have seen with Tom Landry, there comes a day when even great coaches get passed on by the everchanging NFL game. Parcells' time has obviously come. Much like his counterpart in Washington, Joe Gibbs, Parcells is still living in the 80's and seems out of touch with today's athlete. He is still trying to win games 16-13 in a league where the mentality is a lot more wide open, imaginative and aggressive.
Much like Drew Bledsoe, Parcells' time has come and it is time for him to go.
