I'm thinking of buying a boat.

I think the boat idea is a great one Theo but i wouldn't want one, personally, unless it was one you could sleep on as well for a day or two. That would be awesome to own that way. You could still do your things (fishing and what not) and you wouldn't be time restricted. It would be a blast.

This is my boat. My friends and I like to take it out in the gulf (I'm the one waving).

I need someone to talk me out of it. :)

This will be used for watersports and some fishing in a freshwater lake. Any suggestions/thoughts/annoying and unfunny comments?

Buy the Titanic.

A wise man once said. The best boat, is a friends boat. (they are a ***** to take care of)

That said, my brother-in-law has a nice bass boat and I know he mentioned at one point selling it.

The old adage goes "a boat is a hole in the ocean, into which you throw all your money"...

Talk you out of it? If you want one, do it. You only live once.

i have had my boat ( 17 1/2 ft runabout ) for 17 years.
it has been worth every penny.
my kids loved it and still do now even though they are grown.
if you love the water and being on the water i would say its worth it.
i only wish i could get a bigger boat.

by the way Lake Arlington is a fun, small lake and during the week its almost like my own private lake.

they now make deck boats which are set up very similar to pontoon boats but
have fiberglass hulls and look a little more sporty.

just my 2 cents........i have never regretted buying a boat.

Cool, thanks. I'm thinking more along the lines of the Escape or Voyager.

No matter what kind of boat you finally wind up with, it won't be big enough.

a Couple of my friends have boats. They spend more on maintaining and storing it.

Did that work?

My dad has a ski boat. Whenever it rains the cover on it bogs down and you have to bail it out with a bucket. You have to keep the motor or some other mechanical part heated during the wintertime so it won't freeze. It burns a lot of gas....that's about all I can think of.

I remember when I was 13 I used to work for my dad and saved up enough money to buy a go-kart. I always wanted one, but I got tired of it after about a week. And something would always need fixing, like the chain. That required you to unbolt the motor and put a new link in the chain, which sucked. That was the biggest waste of money of my life.

Co-sign...

Yeah, buy a boat...use it about 3 times in the summer...then pay all the insurance, taxes, maintenance, and everything else that you just use until the newness wears off.

Damn! If you want a boat...rent one!

And you call yourself an Attorney?

I agree. I don't even know if my dad has taken his boat out this summer. He hasn't invited me, but I haven't really talked to him. I would definitely rent one a few times before I made the decision.

I've been looking at these Procraft Fish n' Ski...

...perfect for most types of fishing, and damn good for wakeboarding, wakeskating, waterskiing, etc. I'd just throw an aftermarket wakeboard tower on it and call it a day. Has a higher draft than most bass boats so it can handle larger lakes and produce a better wake. Not as high as most "multi-use" boats, and works FAR better for fishing IMO.

....and it looks damn good too.

....but as most have said, boats tend to be more of a PIA to occasional boaters. The people that actually use them....put 200+ hours a year on them are the ones that tend to be the happiest with their purchase. I'd do it, but I like to play....a lot.

An old wise man once told me "resist the temptation of buying a boat".

His logic was that it's a full time job, a never ending maintenance thing, and having a boat will run more than half you life. Insurance, a place to park it, constant upkeep, etc...........

I never understood that logic.

The trade-off and price of admission is worth it IMO. I don't have a boat. But I live in Hawaii and have a lot of buddies who do. There's just things in life that you cannot do without a boat of some kind. I've been fortunate that I have friends with boats and I get to enjoy the fun of it w/o dealing with the upkeep. But, I'm gonna' get a boat at some point no matter what.

Get the boat. Have a blast. Good luck.
