After Aikman was forced to retired due to injuries (back & concussions), Jerry Jones tried so hard to find Aikman's successor. Not even going to list all those QBs (think it was 8) he brought to VR in hopes he could find that missing QB he so desperately needed. Of course he could have drafted a QB, but if you check out the record of those QBs drafted since 2002, it has been a disaster. Only about 7 out of 24 have emerged to remain starters on the team which drafted them. Unsuccessful teams spent millions in their efforts with same amount of success Jerry got -- nada.
If Jerry had only known during those years that he already had his future franchise QB on the team (in the person of a young undrafted QB from Eastern Illinois), he would probably have gone into shock. I really don't think he had a clue about Romo even though Sean Payton offered a 3rd rounder for Romo in the spring of 06. In refusing that offer Jerry obviously placed some value on Romo but no where near that Romo has become. I still remember how disappointed/dejected Jerry was when Parcells benched Bledsoe for Romo. I think Jerry sincerely believed the season was lost. If only he knew.
Can only imagine his shock as he saw Romo's performance against the Panthers, Colts & on Thanksgiving Day against the Bucs. As he watches Romo lead the Cowboys to 4-0 and hopefully to 5-0 after Monday night's game, he must be one of the happiest NFL owners around. He is one of the few NFL owners with a stable situation at QB cause he's got the best young QB in the NFL whose on his way to superstardom & hopefully many SB wins in his career.
Don't ever doubt for a moment that Jerry won't sign Romo to a new contract which benefits both sides. Jerry will remember what it felt to draft/sign Troy Aikman in 1989 and what followed. I'm sure the same thing is going through his mind as he stands ready to sign his next great QB.
