As I'm sure we're all familiar, Tom Landry's coaching career began as a defensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Subsequently, when Landry became our inaugural coach, he always wanted to play well against his old team. Even after his retirement from football (I'd prefer that than "his firing"), Landry remained good friends with the Maras.

The 2007 NFC Divisional playoffs really catalyzed this series into the rivalry it is today. And like in 2007, this upcoming encounter has postseason written all over it. The winner of this contest has a huge advantage in securing the NFC East. Let's take a look at the stats:
Offensive PPG -- Cowboys, 13th (23.6) Giants, 11th (23.9)
Total Offense -- Cowboys, 7th; Giants, 9th
Passing Offense -- Cowboys, 7th (270.8) (14th in sacks, 13th in QB hits); Giants, 4th (296.1)
Rushing Offense -- Cowboys, 15th (114.8); Giants, 32nd (83.8)
Defensive PPG -- Cowboys, 11th (20.3); Giants, 28th (26.2)
Total Defense -- Cowboys, 10th; Giants, 29th
Passing Defense -- Cowboys, 14th (230.2); Giants, 29th (260.2) (5th in sacks)
Rushing Defense -- Cowboys, 9th (100.5); Giants, 23rd (127.0)
They say stats don't lie. If that's true, then the Giants defense is not very vaunted this year. While I want to believe that, I can't ignore that they're tied for 5th in the league in sacks. In case you're wondering, our offensive line ranks 13th in QB hits and 14th in sacks. We're middle of the pack.
To me, this is the key matchup for our offense. The Giants are going to do everything to disrupt Romo. So you know how we counter that? We don't use Romo.
No, listen to what I'm saying. Tony Fiammetta is back. Even when he wasn't, back against Washington a couple of weeks ago, Murray had enough touches and yards to take the heat off of Romo. He didn't have to do everything. And that's what we need. We need a running game, especially in this game.
If Murray has 120 yards, we win the game, assuming we have zero turnovers. We'll melt the clock. We'll move the ball. We'll be in control. To me, our rushing attack is the solution to neutralizing their pass rush.
On defense, it's pretty much the same story. Just as we can't let them get to Romo, we've got to get to Manning. Yakuza Rich pointed out that the Cowboys are 31st against the #2 receiver. Some of that may be because of Ball, but we're starting to see it might be because of Newman too. Regardless, I agree with him that Victor Cruz could go off. If we have an eight sack performance, like we did in Week 14 2008, we should shut down their offense.
Don't get me started on their rushing game. They don't have one. They're dead last in the league. You could say, "Well, but Bradshaw" -- yeah, right. In two of the four games he was out, they eclipsed the century mark or got close. So, it's not their backs per se; it's probably their mangled O-Line. Whatever the case, we're going to shut them down and force the pass.
We know each other so well. I don't expect it to be a low scoring affair, but I do expect the Cowboys to win. I know that's shocking to expect a team that won 4 of its last 5 games to beat a team that lost 4 of its last 5 games, but that's why I'm so controversial. I speak truth to power.
