Important strategic questions to guide draft decisions this week

I"ve a bad feeling this draft is going to be very underwhelming - we'll pick a bunch of jags.
I've a bad feeling the positions chosen won't move the needle with regards to addressing true team needs.

It’s no secret the Dallas Cowboys have roster needs at multiple positions. RB, DT, WR, OL, Secondary, LB…it’s almost everywhere. With the all important draft this week, my hope is that our FO follow a wise strategic path and not reach for positions or pet cats as most fans do, lol. Getting this draft right will dictate a lot not only this season but in a few seasons ahead as well.

So here are some guiding questions that might be helpful in making some key decisions during the upcoming draft:
  • What type of team are we trying to be and does this player fit that philosophy?
  • (For round 1-3 players) Can this player start and have impact immediately or will he need more developmental time?
  • (In each round) What player is rated highest on our board and does he make sense at this moment?
  • Using our scouting system, player evaluations and draft board ratings, which position of need has the deepest number of impact players?
  • Using the above thinking, here’s an example question: If the RB position (or WR, DT, OL etc) is deep, can we get a comparable player in the next round or pick at the same position?
  • Are we potentially missing a great player because we are too focused on a position?
  • Before trading down in round one, ask the question, “Are we missing a great player only to settle for a good player?”
These are just a few of the many questions all NFL executives likely ask themselves before and during a draft. I hope the Cowboys FO has a clear idea of what kind of team they are trying to be and draft the best players that fit that vision. It hasn’t always been obvious what kind of team we’re trying build here.

When I read much of what’s on the draft forum here, many fans are zeroed in on a pet cat or a position that needs to be drafted in certain rounds.Thats ok, that’s what we as fans do. But I think good NFL front office people do their homework, follow their draft board and never get locked in on certain players.

Here’s to a great draft this weekend!
fact is our drunken and inbred brain trust do not even think let alone plan

Good thread and good information on how things play out. As fans, we think we know what is needed and who we should pick but that is rarely the case.

Fans always get excited or angry on who we draft and truth is we won't be right or wrong until we see how they do. Guyton is a perfect example. If he proves he can handle the LT spot this year then we did well, if not then we have to readjust.

It will be an interesting draft no matter what happens.

I have had no confidence in this front office for quite some time, except for their drafting.
Now I am starting to have doubts there too.

Well said Sandy. Fans usually have some pet cats that if we don’t draft them they are offended.

  • What type of team are we trying to be and does this player fit that philosophy?
Just watched the coaches combine interviews and the draft edition of Mick Shots this morning and came away thinking they know exactly what kind of team they're building and exactly what kind of players they want. I had been a little down on this years draft but now I'm feeling a little more optimistic.
  • (For round 1-3 players) Can this player start and have impact immediately or will he need more developmental time?
This kind of sounds like a variation of High floor vs. High Ceiling. In this draft I'm definitely leaning towards High Floor.
  • (In each round) What player is rated highest on our board and does he make sense at this moment?
The usually identify a clusters of players with equal rating so if more than one player in the cluster is available need probably factors in
  • Using our scouting system, player evaluations and draft board ratings, which position of need has the deepest number of impact players?

Looking at past drafts I've noticed that once a run starts on RB or WR a lot of the good players are gone pretty quickly.
  • Are we potentially missing a great player because we are too focused on a position?
Hopefully they follow that same strategy as when Lamb fell to them.
  • Before trading down in round one, ask the question, “Are we missing a great player only to settle for a good player?”

too bad we cant email this to the jones boys and any involved in the draft.

I dont fret about it anymore, I just wait and see what they do.

Its that time of year, Charlie Brown running to kick the football.

How many decades is it for this year?

The Only line coming out of Dallas.

Jerry gunna do, what Jerry wants to do!!!

This tells you 1 of 2 things. We are done by April and Jerry had his fun. Or we finally turned the corner, which I own, i dont feel has happened. If Jerry takes the RB or any RB this high. we re done. Done in April, everything is what you see every year. Just the motions.

The end. So simple a caveman can figure it out. Any one who cant, they are Charlie Brown beliving Lucy will hold the football, return to you scheduled normal lives
