I haven’t been blown away by anyone. We’ll see how impressive they are when the regular season starts. They’ve all had some moments during the preseason but it’s really hard to get a real good gauge until we see them play in a game that matters against starting players. I don’t get carried away with the performances of young players in preseason unless they look real bad. They should be able to make some plays against the talent they’re going up against. Preseason is full of players battling for starting jobs and roster spots.

We'll see bubba.
We've seen camp heroes not even get a snap when the lights are on.
I have trepidations on Tyler at LT, like I would have had if he was at LG, but not as concerning.
Williams is a guy I truly hope starts getting this whole NFL thing by Game 8.
The rest of the guys are pie-in-the-sky and I'm hopeful for every one of them.

Because I want every Cowboy to succeed.

IMO, it’s way too early to know much about these guys because training camp and ps games are not good indicators of real NFL action. History says only 2-3 of these guys will see lots of meaningful downs this year. Tyler Smith, Tolbert and Ferguson will play a lot. Those other guys probably more STs and occasional situations. Turpin has a chance to make some big ST plays.

I’m in agreement that there’s talent and potential there but until they face real game action, I don’t know how we can proclaim them more than having lots of potential. As the great Darrell Royal used to say, “Potential means you ain’t done it yet.”

Only saw bits of the Chargers game, but Turpin and Smith, based on that list, are the most impressive from what I saw. Turpin is the by far most impressive to me with his return abilities.

The other thing to remember about watching rookies in August- pre-season games are like watching Junior Varsity games and regular season games are like varsity. In JV games, you can see talent and potential but the competition is not the same as the next level.

Over 90% of ps game snaps are played against backups and almost 50% of those snaps are against guys who won’t even be playing in the NFL. Yes it’s cool to see the raw ability and potential of of our rookies. Many of them look dynamic and have lots of upside. But it’s not the same as facing Aaron Donald, Von Miller or Patrick Mahomes in a real game.

Just keeping it real.

Sam Williams was whipping Cross who was one of the top picks in the draft.

For me:

1. Tyler Smith - Aside from the odd penalty he is absolutely mauling opponents.
2. Sam Williams - His speed and power jumps of the tape when you watch him
3. Jake Ferguson - His ability to transition from block to running a route is great and he's gonna be real handy on 3rd down
4. Da'Ron Bland - He's well and truely outplayed his draft position and looks capable of starting if called upon
5. Jalen Tolbert - Looks capable, hasn't impressed over and above but has played to his draft position in pre-season and will be asked to do more.
6. Marquese Bell - Looks like a quicker Barry Church to me. Just a really solid SS
7. Denis Houston - Dak likes him, he's running with the ones but I haven't really had opportunity to see him in action.

Williams looks quick but haven't heard a ton of noise on him during camp. May put Bland #2.

it really does seem like an exceptional group this season, in total. Of course, we won’t know for sure until the bullets are live… but it sure looks good now. I’d much rather this than have a group that isn’t looking good at all.

  • Smith will play a ton obviously, and his ability, strength and aggression were obvious this preseason.
  • Williams will be part of a DL rotation and by the look of it, he’ll have pretty heavy usage.
  • Ferguson has the look of a guy that will be good from game one and can be a really good TE1. He’ll play a lot this season as TE2, and probably do it very well. I have zero doubts about Ferguson. He certainly will be better than some TE’s that we’re drafted before him.
  • Bland was a huge surprise. His play has been exceptional this preseason. I knew he had great physical tools but had no idea that he’d be as instinctive, football smart, and as physical as he is. The guy was smooth from day one and had almost no mistakes in all 3 PS games and the joint practices. I think he is already CB4 behind Diggs, Brown, and Lewis. Frankly, I think he’ll pass some of them by the latter part of the season. He already has the look of a very good DB.
  • Tolbert has been less than stellar this preseason but some of that very well might be because of the QB play in the preseason games. It has been shoddy, at best. Word is that he’s been connecting pretty well with Dak, but to be honest he’s been about the least impressive of all these rookies. Of course, Jamar Chase was one of the least impressive Bengals in their camp last season and his play turned way around in the regular season. Jerry Rice had an awful rookie training camp as well. It can happen to WR’s. We’ll have to wait to see how he does in the real games before we judge.
  • Turpin should provide good returns in the kicking game (obviously) and I think he may do a little on offense as well. We will see if they can work him in some. A very good pickup after camp had started.
  • Bell has looked very good going back to rookie minicamp in May, just like Bland. He has the look of a guy that belongs. He brings a load when he tackles and has exceptionally quick feet for a big safety. Frankly, I’m shocked that he didn’t get drafted. He has the physical tools and the mental makeup of an NFL safety. Bell has been a click ahead of the other players on the field, as his reactions seem quicker than the others.
  • Hendershot has a chance to turn into a weapon at TE. He is less of a sure thing than the guys before him on this list, and he will have a lot of work to do… but his preseason has been fairly promising.
  • Houston, I haven’t really seen enough of to know much of anything. He is here on this list just because there are a lot of reports of him connecting with Prescott. Reports of him knowing his assignments is very good though because most UDFA rookies aren’t like that.
  • Davis is a guy that jumped out to me immediately because he showed vision and toughness… two things that I like in running backs. He runs hard. I don’t know if he’ll make it but I would like to see him as RB3.

So, while it isn’t official until they show in the regular season, there are a lot of promising rookies here.

I really kind of see Smith, Williams, Ferguson, And Bland as sure things. With Turpin and Bell being right behind. I’m ready to see these guys in the regular season, so let the games begin.

Rookie crops almost always sound impressive before the real games start. We've seen them dominate future practice squad players all preseason long.

Let's see what Tolbert does against your average NFL starting CB.

Let's watch Tyler Smith battle an experienced Pro Bowl defensive lineman.

How will Sam Williams look going against one of those massive NFL starting LT's?

Will these rookie TE's impress against NFL LBers patrolling the middle of the field?

Will Turpin survive the season against Special Teams headhunters that outweigh him, some by as much as 100 LBS?

The Cowboys had an impressive group of rookies in 1975 when they reached the Super Bowl. They got 14 total Pro Bowl seasons out of the class of 2005. They paved the way to three Super Bowls with the class of 1989.

The degree to which they impress is measured by how far their team advances by the end of the next couple of
seasons.

Well said. The bottom line for any group of rookie players for me isn’t just stats or the eye tests. It’s how many wins the team gets as a result of their contributions.

Agreed the best in the last few years. 4 or 5 that will contribute this year.
