I believe unless tagged, he will be an unrestricted free agent for the Niners.

He is 6' 1", 200 pounds and turns 28 in September. I was really impressed with his play this year and although I would like a little more weight on him, he punished people and was good in coverage. Some stats:

67 tackles, 1 FF, 6 Ints

What do you think?

It will be either Elam or Mike Adams opposite of Sensy.

If it were not for the fact that we will likely have 3 CB spots to fill as well as ILB behind Lee and Carter, possible loss at OLB I would love to upgrade the safety spot. As it stands no I would just as soon give a tendered offer to Elam and give Chruch the oppertunity to compete for the job.

Again not because I don't think we need to upgrade only that we have other areas that will not be an option to fill but a need to fill

......WE ALL want to upgrade safety: be we ALL want to upgrade Oline, dline and CB in a more urgent fashion: they are all garbage right now so.....yeah, I say safety can wait 1 more year (sadly:( )

I don't think Elam was the achilles heal of the defense. Like you I would like to upgrade at that spot but as you indicated OL,DL and CB are bigger areas of concern. I would also say ILB where we need some depth behind Lee and an unprove Carter. We can't go into the season with 2 ILB and nada behind them

can't forget ILB.....the list is long and sometimes hard to remember it all.

Safety can't wait. Elam's a free agent. Dallas will either have to pay him or someone else to fill this roster spot.

It looks likely the 9ers will franchise Goldson, but he will not come cheap even if they don't. I'd have to pass. This team has greater needs elsewhere.

Mike Adams (CLE) would be ideal. Much better in coverage than Elam and can play CB in a pinch. He would allow the 'Boys to move Sensy back to SS where he was much more productive, and he'll probably sign for around the same $2.5M Elam played for last year.

If Adams is that much better than Elam, why is he going to come here for cheap money? I would think there would be a fair amount of interest because a lot of teams need safeties.

First, he's 31. He's no long term answer, but he'll fill the hole we have now while we develop a more permanent FS solution. Second, he's struggled a bit in defending the run in the past. He's much better in pass coverage than run D.

Player's like Goldson, Michael Griffin (TEN) and Tyvon Branch (OAK) will likely be the safeties most in demand in FA.

Here's what a poster named Luke had to say about Adams over at Blogging the Boys:

"PFF 21st ranked Safety 2011 (Elam 55th, actually Adams has beaten Elam in ranking the last 3 years straight), a strong 7th in coverage (Elam 72nd), but did struggle some in run defense. Played with both our Defensive Coordinator Ryan and new Secondary Coach Jerome Henderson at the Browns. In 2009 played CB and was ranked 22nd in the league by PFF. Can play FS and send Sensabuagh to SS. Sensabuagh performed much better in 2010 as a SS than this year as a FS (2011 29th overall as FS, 2010 10th overall as a SS). This improves both FS and SS. Should be cheap. Mike Adams previous deal in 2009: 3 years, $4.1 million, $1.5 M guaranteed. Abe Elam got a 1 year $2.5 million deal. Adams could get 3 year $6 million deal, approx 2 per year."
